One Piece Heroines has dropped a new trailer and the initial reactions are mixed. MyMMO editor Jasmin Beverungen can reassure you: The great stories of the women are worth it despite the unusual look.
As a gigantic fan of One Piece, I consume every material available about the anime and manga. This includes the light novels, which, although not officially from Eiichiro Oda, wonderfully and sensibly expand the story.
In One Piece Heroines, several stories about the female characters from One Piece are told that have nothing to do with the plot of the manga. It is a spin-off.
During my trip to Japan, I bought the two volumes that exist so far. I became aware of the stories through my favorite character Perona, who receives her own story with Hawkeye in the first volume.
After the latest trailer for the upcoming anime, the first reactions are unfortunately mixed. This is partly due to the graphic style of the series. But I can assure you: Don’t let the look influence you!
Fans criticize the look of the anime, but it is merely a sideshow
The new drawing style for the Heroines anime is much softer than in the anime. This is noticeable in the eyes, which no longer have large, clear edges but are drawn a bit narrower and softer. Also, details on the face, like eyelashes or lips, are significantly more emphasized.
This doesn’t sit well with some viewers of the trailer. On TikTok, there are several comments questioning whether this is jokingly about “Two Piece” or what they have just seen. They can’t even tell if the blonde character appearing in the trailer is supposed to be Sanji.
But I can promise you that you won’t be disappointed if you look past the visuals. Since I’ve read the light novels, I already know the story that will be shown in the anime. If you are big fans of any of the women from One Piece, you absolutely must not miss the series or the respective episode.
- Nami’s strong personality and self-confidence are much more evident in the Heroines series.
- In Nico Robin’s story, we experience what happened to her during the time skip. We also see deeper interactions between her and the Revolutionary Army for the first time.
- As a fan of Perona, I was most excited about her chapter. Here, I learned not only that she is just as much of a sweet tooth as I am, but also what a caring person she actually is.
Unfortunately, not all chapters are equally exciting. Vivi’s story was a bit disappointing to me, as it only revolves around a fan letter from one of her admirers. However, for the anime, I can imagine that something similar to the One Piece fan letters phenomenon might happen.
Yet, even with Vivi’s chapter, a great story about the character emerges without being overly sexualized as in the anime. Therefore, I sincerely urge you to give the series a chance, even if the visuals initially put you off.
What do you think of the look of One Piece Heroines? Will you watch the anime, or does the look bother you so much that you shun the series? The anime starts on July 11, 2026, on Netflix.
By the way, did you know that the actress for Nami from the Netflix series One Piece is just as big a fan of Perona as I am? The cast had revealed whom they voted for in the big One Piece survey: I share a trait with “Nami” from One Piece on Netflix, but we are not alone
