A successful monster collector wants to outdo itself, relies on type effects that shake up the genre

Cassette Beasts 2002 Titel title

Cassette Beasts has MeinMMO editor Jasmin already convinced with its concept of tapes. Now comes the sequel, which is supposed to offer even more freedom than the prequel.

Anyone who wants to succeed in the monster-collector genre is currently having a hard time, as the competition never rests. It takes a novel approach to stand out from the crowd and compete with veterans like Pokémon.

This is exactly the approach that Cassette Beasts brought about three years ago. In the game, you do not simply catch monsters with balls or other objects but record their data on tapes and then transform into them.

At Gamescom 2026, I was able to take a look at the sequel Cassette Beasts 2002, which is set to be released in March 2027. To surpass its predecessor, which has a 94% positive rating on Steam, the game is now focusing on even more freedom.

More freedom than in the predecessor

The people behind Cassette Beasts told me that they thought about how to restructure the concept to attract even more players for part 2. They agreed to offer players even more freedom.

This is evident, for example, in the companion who accompanies you in the game. In the prequel, you woke up on the beach of New Wirral and always met Kayleigh as your first companion. Only later could you unlock additional companions through story quests.

In Cassette Beasts 2002, things will look different. Here, at the beginning of the game, you need to borrow a phone for a story mission and have several characters to choose from. The character you ask for the phone first will be your permanent companion for the game.

There will also be more freedom in romances, and players should be able to choose with whom they enter into a relationship.

Additionally, the developers have changed the perspective. In the prequel, players had to settle for a top-down view. In Cassette Beasts 2002, you can rotate the camera more freely and thus enjoy more viewpoints.

Type effects as a hallmark in the genre

A major strength from the prequel, which is also retained in the new game, is the different types. Like in other similar titles, the monsters are divided into different types, such as water, metal, or even quirky types like plastic.

Instead of simply stating, like in other games, that some elements are more effective against others, Cassette Beasts already features real chemical reactions. If a plastic-type monster is attacked by fire, for example, it can melt and turn into a poison type.

In the demo, I also attacked a metal-type monster with a water attack. Suddenly, the game noted that the opponent had corroded. I felt like I was back in my chemistry studies.

The battle system is super creative and so unique that every fan of monster-collecting games should definitely check out Cassette Beasts 2002. It’s a lot of fun to try out the different type combinations and see what happens when you attack the opposing monster.

For better clarity, you can even call up the type chart in battle at any time to see if you will deal a strong attack against the monster – or vice versa.

Have you already played Cassette Beasts? Feel free to tell us in the comments what you think of the sequel and whether you will take a look at it.

Cassette Beasts is, in my opinion, one of the best games for fans of monster-collecting games. But there are also other titles in the genre that you should definitely take a look at. You can find out which ones these are in the following list on MeinMMO: 13 games that compete with Pokémon and Palworld for monster collecting
