RuneScape has received one of the most important updates in recent years as part of the “Road to Restoration” and fulfilled a frequently mentioned wish from the community.
What is happening right now in RuneScape? RuneScape is celebrating its 25th anniversary with the so-called “Road to Restoration.” This involves an update roadmap designed to make the venerable MMORPG fit for the future and more attractive to new players. For example, the Jagex team has already optimized the onboarding and user interface, and revamped the melee, ranged, and magic combat styles.
The freshly released update focuses entirely on modernizing player avatars, which have appeared quite blocky, low-detail, and outdated from today’s perspective. Specifically, the update brings:
- high-resolution head and body models
- matching chat heads
- new hairstyles for male and female characters
- redesign of existing hairstyles
- new selection of standard starter outfits and refined versions of the most popular base clothing items from Thessalia’s shop
However, the overhaul of the avatars is not yet complete. In the fall, a second update will focus again on character models. The new trailer prepares you for the visual improvements:
“A victory for Jagex”
How is the community reacting? The shown improvements are very well received by many players. No wonder, as parts of the community have long been wishing for a modernization of RuneScape.
- BasicCPA commented under the trailer: “You have all done great this year. I am very satisfied with the Road to Restoration and your hard work. Please do not lose sight of this roadmap – you are doing exactly the right thing to attract new and returning players while giving us long-time subscribers what we deserve. A victory for Jagex.”
- iZehta adds: “Maybe I’ll actually install RuneScape and take a break from Old School RuneScape – it looks great!”
- onlytanner is excited: “I am really impressed. I created my first account 18 years ago and have been playing intermittently since then. […] Now that I see what you have accomplished and that you are keeping your promises regarding the long-term growth of the game, I am really interested in returning to RuneScape.”
- ADstoic cheers: “This is everything I ever wanted”

What else is the team planning? For the coming year, the developers plan, among other things, to create a consistent and unified visual identity across RuneScape. This means that areas that have not yet been modernized will receive graphical redesigns.
On the other hand, the team is working to improve immersion by removing items and cosmetic objects that thematically do not fit the high-fantasy medieval world. As an example, they mention a shark costume.
RuneScape and Old School RuneScape manage to attract more and more players to the servers despite their old age, rising subscription prices, and outdated technology. The last remarkable record was set just in April 2026: Ancient MMORPG breaks 250,000 players simultaneously, even though the developers have raised prices
