During the recent fan festival in the USA, the head of Final Fantasy XIV faced an open Q&A session. Live on Twitch, players demanded the ability to give their characters thick bottoms. But that seems to be quite complicated.
What do fans want with thick bottoms? Specifically, players of Final Fantasy XIV wish for the possibility to adjust the size of their character’s rear end. This question arose during a Q&A session at the American fan festival, where the new expansion Evercold was announced.
The Director and Producer of the game, Naoki Yoshida, tries to explain why adjustable bottoms in the MMORPG are difficult: When you make the butt big – let’s say you’re wearing a sword sheath on your side or have a cape hanging behind you – if the butt is larger than it should be, you will see it sticking out.
Here, Yoshida refers to what is called clipping. This term is used when assets in a game overlap or protrude out of another asset. Developers usually try to avoid this most of the time. However, the attendees at the fan festival found that argument insufficient.

Why are fans so insistent on the slider? In Final Fantasy XIV there is the character Zenos. He has an outfit in his original design that makes his rear end look enormous. This has long led to memes and jokes about him in the community. Now they cite him as a prime example: But it works with Zenos
, someone in the audience shouts.
It seems to take a moment for the implication to register with Naoki Yoshida. He responds with a tired I’m dying
and promises to discuss the topic again with his team.

However, the next question triggers him just like the one about the butt slider: Can we have long hair down to the lower back/upper butt?
Again, Yoshida cites the clipping issue as the reason for the lack of long hairstyles. However, the audience brings up the Zenos argument again, who has very long blonde hair.
Ultimately, Naoki Yoshida concedes: He wants to bring up the topic of both the butt slider and long hair again with his team. But he also says: Please stop mentioning Zenos all the time!
During the fan festival, Naoki Yoshida also announced the upcoming expansion Evercold. In it, players will find themselves in a splinter world afflicted by eternal ice.
