Although Rhaenyra had officially been declared the successor, Aegon II took the Iron Throne after the death of King Viserys I. This ignited one of the bloodiest civil wars in the history of House Targaryen, which claimed not only countless lives but also dragons.
Particularly in the series House of the Dragon, we learn that the takeover was not initiated by Aegon himself. Nevertheless, he played along and did not exactly distinguish himself during his reign. He was a weak ruler without decisiveness and political acumen. Even in his youth, he was a spoiled brat who preferred to drink and indulge rather than learn or train.

Besides his incompetence, Aegon proved to be quite cruel as well. At the end of the war, he executed Rhaenyra by having her burned alive by his dragon in front of her son. Eventually, he was poisoned by his own men – the perfect evidence of how poorly Aegon performed as a king.
