Aerys I was the second son of Daeron II Targaryen, who is the reigning king during the events of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The two are not seen in the prequel. Only two of Aerys’ brothers, Baelor and Maekar, appear so far.
Aerys himself was quite the bookworm. It is said that Aerys preferred to take a book to bed rather than his own wife. He was so obsessed with reading that he forgot other important things: for example, to change his clothes or to take care of his duty as king.
Aerys was actually not interested in ruling Westeros at all. Even several bloody uprisings in the realm could not change that. He simply ignored all these problems. The actual leadership was therefore taken over by his Hand of the King, Brynden Tully. Although he dealt with the rebellions, he also created a real police state that instilled fear and terror among the population. This, of course, was once again ignored by the king.
