Robert Baratheon was the first king on the Iron Throne not from House Targaryen. In a legendary rebellion, he dethroned the Mad King, Aerys II Targaryen, and took his place. As a war hero, Robert definitely made a name for himself. Unfortunately, as king, things steadily went downhill for him.
He became increasingly excessive, drank heavily, held costly tournaments, and showed little interest in ruling. He incurred a mountain of debt, which particularly played into the hands of the Lannisters, and practically never appeared at political meetings in the Small Council. Ultimately, he died an almost embarrassing death: drunk and gored by a boar.
What followed was the War of the Five Kings, which we see in Game of Thrones. Not a particularly glorious legacy for a ruler.
