- Rider: Aegon “the Conqueror” Targaryen
No dragon is as legendary as Balerion, the Black Dread. His scales and wings were black as coal, just like his deadly fire. He was born over 100 years before Aegon’s Conquest and is the only dragon that still comes from Valyria, the old dragon empire. In his old age, he was so large that his mouth could allegedly swallow a full-grown mammoth.
Balerion was once the dragon of Aegon I. Targaryen himself. Together, they fought in numerous battles and spread fear and terror among the enemies of the Conqueror. From the swords of the defeated opponents, Balerion’s fire melted the Iron Throne. His fire was so hot that it could melt steel as easily as stone. This was particularly demonstrated at the famous example of Harrenhal. The huge castle was nearly completely turned to ash.
After Aegon’s death, he was ridden by Maegor the Cruel, who ruthlessly used him to break rebellions and eliminate enemies. Later, Princess Aerea briefly rode him before Viserys ultimately claimed him in the year 93 A.E. as the last rider. At that point, Balerion was already so old and weak that he could hardly fly. He could only manage three laps over King’s Landing. Shortly thereafter, he died of old age at nearly 200 years. This already shows how incredibly powerful Balerion was. No one could ever defeat him, except time itself.
Despite his enormous power, Balerion was not all-powerful. In his brief time with Aerea, he experienced horrors that could even inflict harm on him.
