When Aegon the Conqueror came to Westeros, he had three dragons with him: Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes. There is the least known about Meraxes, which is why the silver dragon lady is often underestimated. However, she was even larger than Vhagar and at least as strong. It is said that she could swallow an entire horse at once.
Her rider was Rhaenys Targaryen, the younger sister of Aegon. She loved to fly and spent more time in the air than her two siblings combined. Together, Rhaenys and Meraxes fought in all the decisive battles of the conquest, including the famous “Field of Fire”. This was the only battle in which all three dragons were deployed simultaneously. Almost four thousand men were burned alive that day.
Later, Rhaenys with her dragon led the first attack on Dorne. During this battle, Meraxes was hit in the eye by a bolt from a scorpion. She died still in the air and crashed down from the sky with Rhaenys on her back, who did not survive the fall.
