Rank 1 on our list goes to none other than Aegon the Conqueror himself. He was the founder of the Targaryen dynasty and the first king of Westeros. What sets him apart from everyone else on this list is the perfect combination of power, success, and historical significance.
Aegon was the rider of Balerion, the “Black Dread” – the largest and mightiest dragon that ever lived. Balerion was so old that he had experienced old Valyria before its downfall. With this mighty creature by his side, Aegon achieved what no one had thought possible before. He conquered Westeros and united six of the seven kingdoms under his rule.
Together with his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya, he formed a power that no army or fortress could stand against. Aegon, however, did not use this power only for destruction. He created and shaped an empire that he skillfully ruled for many years. He had King’s Landing built and forged the Iron Throne with Balerion’s flames – the ultimate symbol of ruling.
No other dragon rider in the history of Westeros combines so much military strength, political foresight, and pure dragon power in one person.
As we can see, when it comes to the question of the most powerful dragon rider, it is not just about the people. The sheer strength of the dragon is also extremely important. Whoever manages to control a powerful dragon gains much power themselves.
