In October 2016, Respawn Entertainment released Titanfall 2, published by Electronic Arts. The shooter is still highly rated, has many fans, and… very few active players. Nevertheless, gamers have been hoping for a successor for years and are eagerly awaiting the announcement of Titanfall 3 – in vain. Now a shooter is coming that could fill the gap left by Respawn.
What kind of game is this? Empulse is a first-person shooter that adapts the gameplay of Titanfall and is set to be released in early access for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam in 2026. The game focuses on the well-known characteristics of its predecessor:
- Fast movement including wallruns and grappling hooks
- 6v6 PvP with “foot soldiers” and player-controlled mechs
- The mechs have heavy weapons, unique abilities, and plenty of health points and appear on the map during a match
There will also be so-called P.A.I.N.T. bombs that allow you to change the surface of the map, giving you a tactical advantage.

Who is behind the shooter? Behind Empulse is the developer studio 1047 Games, known for the arena shooter Splitgate, which became a surprise hit on Steam in 2019. In 2024, the developers announced a sequel to their successful title with Splitgate.
Like Splitgate 1, the sequel should also combine the gameplay of Halo with (relatively) freely placeable portals, through which players could not only travel but also shoot or look through. Nevertheless, the sequel should bring various changes, such as playable classes with unique abilities.
What is the studio notorious for? The studio ran into trouble and lost sympathy points with shooter fans when the CEO and co-founder of 1047 Games, Ian Proulx, during a speech at the Summer Game Fest 2025 boasted that he was tired of playing the same Call of Duty every year, only to announce a battle royale mode for Splitgate 2 in the next breath while wearing a “Make FPS Great Again” hat – combined with really high prices in the in-game shop.
The players’ criticism at that time was: Instead of developing something new, they were following trends despite big claims and challenges to other developers. The result: The shooter had already lost 90% of its players 7 weeks after release and went back into beta.
Since May 2025, “Splitgate 2” has been playable again, this time under the name “SPLITGATE: Arena Reloaded”. Many players write that since the re-release, the shooter has been significantly better, but as of May 2026, a year after release, the game only had an average of 430 players on Steam.
