The popular Ultimate Team fan site Futhead is no longer available. A month before the release of FC 24, not only does the FIFA era end, but a long-time faithful companion of the community is disappearing from the scene.
What was Futhead? For many FIFA fans, Futhead was the first platform that helped them search for players and design creative teams since the introduction of Ultimate Team mode in FIFA 09. Players could view all available cards in FUT in the form of a digital database, track their prices on the transfer market, and form a Dreamsquad with all tactics available in the game.
Additionally, Futhead provided one of the first customizers for self-designed cards and was thus one of the pioneers in this field. This allowed the community to equip their idols from various clubs with an ultimate 99-rated card.
After its founding in 2011, the website saw rapid growth and became one of the most popular fan sites for the FIFA community.
However, others also recognized that the concept of Futhead was extremely successful and established their databases for Ultimate Team.
Futhead has to concede defeat and goes offline
Strong competition came from the site Futbin, which was founded in 2014. In 2017, another competitor, FUTWIZ, joined the fray. Over time, Futhead had to concede to the newer databases.
After operating somewhat under the radar in recent years, the end of the site has now come. In a brief statement (see image above), the website bids farewell to its fans and thanks them for their years of support.
This news sparked many reactions on Reddit. Longtime fans took their farewells. Alongside a competitor, a very special user also paid tribute.
Fans, competitors, and founders bid an emotional farewell
On reddit.com, under the subreddit “Futhead is shut down”, many fans took their farewell and usually found conciliatory words.
User “zuggiz” reminisces: “Sad times, that was my first FUT website before I switched to Futbin. I am getting old.”
Not quite as nostalgic and conciliatory, user “Glass_of_Pork_Soda” expresses the opinion that EA Sports bears some blame for the end of Futhead.
He accuses EA Sports of having “killed” Futhead. In response to another user’s inquiry, he states: “They (EA, editorial note) revoked Futhead’s right to design cards and made the transfer market updates very difficult.” (via reddit.com)
But the competition also did not miss the opportunity to express their gratitude for the pioneering work done. An employee of FUTWIZ, “futwiz-ruan”, expressed sadness and gratitude: “It’s sad to see. Even as rivals, we are eternally grateful for what they have given to the FIFA community.”
Upon closer inspection, there is also a statement from one of the co-founders, Dan Paulson, who used the subreddit to address a few personal words to the fans. He begins his longer text as follows: “To you. It has been a great journey.” At the same time, he referred to the inevitability of this outcome: “… Unfortunately, it has been a foregone conclusion for years.”
