A Monster Calls
- Released: 2016
- Director: Juan Antonio Bayona
Be warned, keep the tissues ready: A Monster Calls uses the fantasy genre to tell a heart-wrenching story about a very real problem: cancer. The mother of thirteen-year-old Conor is severely ill and has to go to the hospital repeatedly.
This takes a toll on the boy. One night, he awakens from nightmares and eventually meets a strange monster near his house that has emerged from a tree. The creature tells Conor three stories that revolve around fundamental human values.
The film is comparatively manageable, but it addresses heavy topics that children may also encounter. Grief and grief processing are important keywords to describe A Monster Calls. Here, there are no epic battles, fairies, or fantasy clichés, but simply raw human emotions.
