Labyrinth
- Released: 1986
- Director: Jim Henson
Jim Henson was an expert in creative but also quirky characters, especially those that were puppets or animatronics. After all, he was behind Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, and The Dark Crystal. In Labyrinth, he sends the 15-year-old Sarah into a fantastic world where she must save her half-brother from goblins.
To do this, she must traverse a labyrinth filled with all sorts of dangers. But companions like the goblin Hoggle also play an important role in freeing the kidnapped half-brother from the clutches of the goblin king Jareth.
Jareth, played by musician David Bowie, is probably the highlight of the film alongside the inventive designs and the dark world, delivering a wonderfully bizarre performance. Jareth’s relationship with the underage Sarah, played by Jennifer Connelly, is somewhat questionable; aside from that, Labyrinth remains an unpolished diamond of the fantasy genre to this day.
