The Princess Bride
- Released: 1987
- Director: Rob Reiner
Also from the 80s, but significantly lighter and more optimistic than Labyrinth, is The Princess Bride. Again, there are two narrative levels: In reality, a grandfather reads a story to his sick grandson, the plot of which we then directly experience.
In it, the simple farmhand Westley falls in love with Buttercup, a beautiful young woman. When Westley is ambushed by pirates during a sea voyage, Buttercup believes her beloved is dead. After resisting marriage to Prince Humperdinck, she herself is kidnapped and must be rescued by a “mysterious” stranger.
The charm of this film lies in the fact that it takes familiar fantasy clichés and rearranges them, plays with expectations, and shows a good deal of humor. Unlike many other films on this list, The Princess Bride is a refreshingly light-hearted representative of the genre.
