Princess Mononoke
- Released: 1997
- Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Of course, many anime also belong to the fantasy genre, and Princess Mononoke is one of the best. At this point, Spirited Away could also stand here, which is not unlike Pan’s Labyrinth in mixing reality and fantasy.
In Princess Mononoke, anime master Miyazaki tells the epic story of Prince Ashitaka, who is cursed and suddenly finds himself in the midst of a conflict. While humans want to destroy large parts of the forest for resources, on the other side stand the old gods and, of course, the animals.
The film is visually excellent and addresses important issues like environmental protection on a content level. For a Miyazaki film, it is also quite dark and brutal and features ambiguous characters. There is no crude division into good and evil in Princess Mononoke.
