Even those who haven’t seen this film are at least familiar with images or music from it. The song “Over the Rainbow” has become world-famous, and the story of the girl Dorothy, who is carried off to the land of Oz by a whirlwind, is now iconic.
The wizard who rules there is supposed to help her find her way home. On the way to the Emerald City, Dorothy meets an illustrious group of companions: a straw-stuffed scarecrow, a heartless tin man, and a cowardly lion.
Even 86 years after its release, the film still entertains wonderfully and establishes many images and quotes that are still used in pop culture today. With the musical Wicked, the world of Oz has received additional material in recent years; there is much to discover in the realm of the seemingly powerful wizard.
