The NeverEnding Story
- Released: 1984
- Director: Wolfgang Petersen
A classic of German fantasy films, of which unfortunately, there are not too many. Wolfgang Petersen adapted only the first third of Michael Ende’s novel, but the film is still worth seeing and emotionally moving.
The boy Bastian discovers a book in a shop, promptly steals it, and secretly reads it. This is how he learns about Atréju, also a child, who sets off to find the Childlike Empress in her ivory tower.
The journey leads him through a dark land haunted by the “Nothing.” Iconic designs such as that of the dragon Fuchur or the extremely sad moments – the swamp, so to speak – are unforgettable for anyone who has seen The NeverEnding Story. The author Michael Ende was far from pleased with the adaptation, which should not stop anyone from diving into the world of Phantásien.
