The Twitch streamer LetsHugo thought he was safe as he strolled through a well-attended anime convention wearing a mask. But a clever fan had other plans.
What kind of streamer is he? LetsHugo is currently the shooting star of German Twitch. No other German-speaking streamer has gained more new followers this year than the 20-year-old Luxembourger (via Sullygnome).
He first gained attention with his subathons and sellout streams, but it was his participation in major streamer events that finally gave LetsHugo his breakthrough in 2023. Suddenly, the 20-year-old seems to be everywhere:
Currently, LetsHugo has more than 622,000 followers on Twitch. During his visit to DoKomi, Germany’s largest anime and manga convention, the 20-year-old faced his new level of notoriety.
With subathons and sellout streams, like the ones LetsHugo did, streamers often promise to perform crazy actions when certain goals are reached. It can backfire, as this streamer had to find out:

Twitch streamer shaves his head for donation and is bitterly disappointed!
With Compliments to Success
What was happening at DoKomi? Together with more than 150,000 other anime and manga fans, LetsHugo attended DoKomi last weekend. There, he also met some of his fans, who approached him or handed him a few euros as a “real-life donation”.
Such commotion can quickly become overwhelming when you’re not used to the attention, but fortunately, LetsHugo had an ace up his sleeve. He quickly put on a mask and joked that this would surely make him unrecognizable. That he couldn’t see much either was something he could cope with (via YouTube).
How did that go for the streamer? Apparently, despite his well-thought-out disguise, LetsHugo could not fool a particularly observant fan. The streamer denies the request for a photo, insisting he is not this Hugo.
The fan quickly responds and changes his tactic: “You look good, can I take a photo?” The 20-year-old cannot resist and gives in. You can find the whole interaction on LetsHugo’s YouTube channel.
Twitch colleague Marcel “MontanaBlack” Eris is already a bit longer in the game and has significantly more followers than LetsHugo. However, he was also not prepared for the crowds that awaited him at gamescom in August 2022:
A player has randomly received an item with the highest item level currently in Diablo 4 and got really lucky with the properties during an upgrade. Here you will find out when an upgrade is worth it for you as well.
If you find items with good properties but could still use a boost, your trusted jeweler and blacksmith can help you. Every upgrade you make there on your items increases the item power by 5 points.
On Reddit, an equipment item with the highest item level was reported on June 23, which has an item power of 870 after the upgrade.

When should I break down or sell items in Diablo 4?
“Then this trophy emerged”
What kind of item is this? The item is the two-handed sword “Infernal Edge,” which has an item power of 845 and is presented by u/5altwaterCowboy in his post. He writes there that he had nothing better to do at level 100 and had farmed “Almunn.”
“Almunn” is a unique monster in Diablo 4 that drops a special item upon being killed. There are several of these in the open world, as we have listed here.
5altwaterCowboy writes on Reddit: “After about 150 kills, to my surprise, this little trophy emerged.” (via Reddit).

The properties of the two-handed sword are also quite good. The sword has not only a high damage per second of 3.022 but also a double boost for critical hit damage (+52.5%, +63%), an increase of 93% for damage to injured opponents, and +72 to all stats.
How does he get the high item power? The item has an original item power of 845, which is already quite high. 5altwaterCowboy went to the blacksmith with his new two-handed sword and upgraded the sword 5 times.
Every upgrade increases the item power by 5 points as well as the base value, such as armor or damage per second. Thus, he reached an item power of 870.
According to Icy Veins, it is speculated that drops from special elite enemies can reach a value of up to 850. However, there have been no reports beyond this (via icy-veins.com).
When is an upgrade worth it?
Is an upgrade always worth it? Upgrading items is worth it if you have materials in abundance and want to take the boosts, as well as if you are sure that you want to keep the items. We recommend this when you are close to the endgame and from an item power of about 750.
If you find legendaries that do not have good properties but have good legendary aspects, you can extract these at the occultist. Note that you can only use the extracted aspects once.
As for equipment that is not a weapon, not much changes from an item power of 725. This is related to the breakpoints.
You should keep an eye on the breakpoints when upgrading, alongside your materials and your gold, because: when you upgrade items, they should rather be close to the level borders to experience a noticeable boost.
The level borders are not directly apparent, but we have listed the values for you:
In an old video clip, the actor Robin Williams, along with his daughter Zelda, told the story behind the special name of his child. This clip is currently going viral again on TikTok.
Robin Williams († August 2014) was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, who captured the hearts of viewers with his roles in Dead Poets Society, Jumanji, and as the Genie in Aladdin.
Fans still celebrate him today as one of the most likable stars ever, who was cherished not only as an actor but also for his character.
In addition to his acting career, Robin Williams was also a passionate gamer in his free time, especially the Zelda series captivated him.
With Tears of the Kingdom, the latest game in the series was released this year for the Nintendo Switch:

Robin Williams sat captivated in front of the screen for hours
A vintage clip is currently circulating on TikTok. It originates from an advertisement for the game Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which was released in 2011 for the Nintendo 3DS.
Robin Williams and his daughter Zelda sat together on the couch, sharing the anecdote about why the actor named his child after the princess of the well-known game series.
At that time, Robin Williams bought one of the first Nintendo systems and a massive television.
Zelda then shares that some children at school made fun of her special name. During that time, the girl told her mother that she would change her name once she turned 18.
But now Zelda likes her special name: “But then I loved it again,” she says. Her environment keeps telling her that it is the coolest name ever.
Her father jokingly remarks that she is lucky that Zelda was the couple’s favorite game: “You’re lucky you aren’t named Mario, Luigi, or Samus.”
However, father and daughter quickly agree on an absolute no-go name: Peach would not work in their view.
“Oh no, Peach would be a difficult name for a girl,” says Robin Williams. His daughter laughs and agrees: “I wouldn’t see the end of the torment with that [name].”
However, it’s still a better name than Ocarina or Epona, Zelda says. At the thought of naming their daughter after a horse, both grin.
Later, Robin Williams speaks once more about the name Zelda and concludes: “It is magical, just like she […].” While saying this, he points to his daughter, who sits next to him smiling.
A different well-known Hollywood actor, however, has a very different relationship with the game Zelda:
Robin Williams passed away in 2014 due to the consequences of his depression, which he openly spoke about during his lifetime. If dark thoughts trouble you: You are not alone. Please seek help. For example, you can contact the telephone counseling service at 0800/111 0 111 or the online counseling service, where you can also use a chat. This is free and applies nationwide.

Gems are an important resource in Diablo 4 to further enhance equipment. However, when all slots are filled, the gems only waste unnecessary space and block potential legendary loot slots. A player is now complaining that his inventory is completely cluttered with gems and is asking for advice.
What is his problem? The player NeonMagic shows his chest on the Reddit forum and asks other users what the hell he is supposed to do with the gems. In his chest, there are gems of all kinds in varying strengths that he has found in treasure chests or received from monsters.

What are the gems used for? The gems enhance the character depending on where they are used, in different areas. In weapons, they deal more damage, in armor they provide more defense, and in jewelry, they offer more resistance.
They can be upgraded at the jeweler and fused into stronger versions. The most valuable example is the Royal Gem.
Once used, they provide a certain bonus; in case of doubt, the gems can be removed and another type can be used. However, especially in the endgame, there are more gems than available slots in the equipment, so the stock can fill up quickly.
The following video reveals which items you should salvage and which you should sell:
Start video
When should I break down or sell items in Diablo 4?
What do other users advise? The players mainly have one piece of advice: The affected player should ideally leave the gems on the ground. Since he has enough specimens of each kind, it makes no sense to collect even more gems.
An alternative to create as much space in the inventory as possible is to embed gems into inventory slots instead of throwing them away. When disassembling items, you get the jewels back for free and can use them again.
There are still some other creative ideas, some of which are probably not meant to be taken seriously, but we don’t want to withhold from you:
Jason-Griffin: “Go to World Level 1. Start in the town closest to the back of the PvP zone. Begin dropping them one by one in the style of Hansel and Gretel as you head to the PvP zone. Drop them at the beginning of the PvP zone and place a big prize at the end. Set a blood mark and wait for someone to pick up their prize. Kill them.”
vince0000: “Sell them for about 36 gold, now that you’ve picked them up – but don’t do that again.”
Even when sold, the gems bring in almost no money. It would only be worthwhile to collect Royal Gems.
Many players wish for a gem bag to still keep the excess gems. So far, Blizzard has not presented any plans to include such a bag. Instead, there will be a material tab in Season 2 where the gems will be listed.

In the shooter “Ready or Not,” there is now a new level where the nightmare of every streamer comes true.
Which game is it about? Ready or Not (PC) is both a hardcore shooter and a realistic police simulation. The game was released in December 2021 on Steam and aims to depict the operations of a police special forces unit.
Accordingly, you have to free buildings from different dangerous situations with your SWAT team in various PvE levels. Tactical approach and attention are always important, as not all people in the buildings are villains. If you are too quick on the trigger, you might hit a hostage or other civilians – and that results in point deductions.
Since the game relies on realistic approaches, you cannot run through rooms and shoot at everything that moves like in Call of Duty. You need to carefully open doors, scout rooms, and eliminate enemies selectively.
It is actually better to arrest a criminal alive, even if he is heavily armed. The game provides you with various gadgets like flashbangs that you can carry during mission planning.
What is the deal with the blue-haired streamer? Ready or Not is known for wanting to be as realistic as possible in the design of its levels and creating situations that could also happen to real police officers. The shooter also takes paths that some players consider controversial.
At the end of June, the developer studio VOID Interactive introduced a new level where players storm the apartment of a blue-haired streamer named Michael “Milky Toes” Williams with their heavily armed police unit.
Michael lives with his mother and is live when suddenly the SWAT team breaks into his home. According to the level’s description, a viewer told the police on the phone that he was the streamer and wanted to kill his family and take hostages. However, instead of encountering an armed streamer, players with their SWAT unit find Michael’s illegal Bitcoin farm.

Ready or Not shows its streamer level in the trailer
The Nightmare of a Streamer as a Level
What is the background of the level? The level involving the streamer alludes to the so-called “swatting,” a very malicious and dangerous prank suffered by many major streamers. For example, the American Ice Poseidon was swatted on a plane. Other streamers like Nickmercs reported being swatted 3 times a week.
What is swatting? Swatting describes a situation where viewers call the police and tell a serious lie to prompt them to show up heavily armed at the affected streamer’s location.
The police then deploy a special unit (S.W.A.T.) and expect to find a highly dangerous situation at the scene. This can involve alleged hostage situations, bomb threats, or similar claims.
In addition to the obvious danger posed by the armed police operation in combination with the lie of a highly dangerous situation, the dangerous prank can also have psychological consequences. For example, streamer Ice Poseidon has stated that he developed post-traumatic stress disorder due to the many police incidents.
After Kick has snatched numerous large Twitch streamers, the streaming platform has now introduced a new filter for certain content. This is exactly the content that Kick has become known for.
Kick is a relatively new platform that is meant to compete with the established streaming giant Twitch.
In a tweet from July 4, Kick shows a graphic and writes: “Choose your adventure.” (via Twitter). The graphic indicates that you can hide the categories “Pools, Hot Tubs & Bikinis” and “Slots & Casino” on Kick.
In particular, the latter is exactly what probably comes to mind first when thinking of content on Kick. Because: There is a direct connection between the streaming platform and the controversial online casino Stake.
MontanaBlack also received an offer from Kick but rejected it. He does not want to be the scapegoat who switches to a platform built on casino money.

“Come on, Twitch”
Why is Kick filtering the content? There has been no explanation so far from Kick. However, it is clear on social media that a large part of the users are happy about the feature. Perhaps Kick hopes for an increase in the number of streamers and viewers.
How does the community react? Several users are asking under Kick’s tweet if they can hide other categories or individual streamers. HelpLifeAIert writes: “Could ‘Hide Valorant’ be an option? I find it more offensive than breasts” (via Twitter).
simplychristv replies to the streaming platform’s tweet with a poll and refers to the two options on the graphic. For hiding “Pools, Hot Tubs & Bikinis” and “Slots & Casino”, 70.9% agree (via Twitter). So far, 4,447 users have voted in the poll (as of July 4).
Many are making a comparison to Twitch. impendinggreatness writes: “Already implemented? Damn, come on, Twitch.” (via Reddit). For this, the user receives 2,500 upvotes. Others note that Kick makes changes incredibly quickly, unlike Twitch and YouTube.
This shows that the desire for a filtering option seems to be quite large. Whether Twitch will follow suit remains to be seen. Currently, there are serious issues on the streaming platform:
Patch 1.4.5 in the sandbox survival game Terraria (97% positive on Steam) is coming soon and could be one of the last major updates for the game. Or maybe not, as the developers have been saying for years.
What kind of game is this? Terraria is a 2D survival sandbox with a pixel look. On Steam, it has a 97% rating of “overwhelmingly positive” and continues to captivate thousands of players even 12 years after its release. With 56,600 concurrent players, it currently ranks 20th among the most played games on Steam (via Steam Charts). The game can sometimes be quite nasty.
The next major update is coming with Patch 1.4.5 – the developers actually intended to stop 8 years ago.
Journey’s End could have been the final update as well.

Terraria: Journey’s End
There is a last time for everything
What is the deal with the “last update”? Ted “Loki” Murphy from Re-Logic, the developer and publisher of Terraria, revealed to PC Gamer that they actually planned to stop in 2015. It was intended that 1.3 would be the last update.
The update at that time brought numerous changes, including revamped NPCs, achievements, expert mode, and more than 800 new items. But Re-Logic was not done yet: “We had all these cool ideas – outstanding bills, so to speak.”
Five years later, the “Journey’s End” update could have signaled the end of the journey fittingly. Initially, it was meant to be just a small update, but somehow it turned into 40 pages of patch notes with new modes, bosses, the bestiary, and golf.
In 2022, Re-Logic added the “Labor of Love” update to thank fans for the eponymous Steam Award. Ironically, the award was given for the fact that the game still receives new content years after its release.
Murphy says the update was truly driven by the fans: “We received so many suggestions and inspirations from those very fans during the update. We do not take this award or the people behind it lightly.”
Re-Logic: “We never say never”
What’s in the upcoming update? With 1.4.5, Terraria is set to receive its very last update this year, really this time. Re-Logic is still not revealing much about the content, except that it mainly focuses on the crossover with the roguelite metroidvania Dead Cells.
In typical Terraria fashion, however, it seems to have grown into something much bigger. Murphy states that the “outstanding bills” have motivated the team to give it their all once again. However, he also acknowledges that “the game feels very complete at this point.”
Despite the ongoing success of Terraria and the active fan community, Murphy feels it will eventually feel right to start working on a second project. However, he has not disclosed what kind of project that will be, only that it could allow for the implementation of ideas that wouldn’t work in Terraria.
When is the update coming? This is still unknown. In a State of the Game, Re-Logic revealed that they are hopefully in the final stage of development. The contents are reportedly almost finished, but they are currently still working on fixes and balancing.
How long this will take is still uncertain as it depends on how many issues they find and how difficult they are to fix.
Whether this will indeed be the very last major update for Terraria is also unclear. “We have been at this point before, so we never say never,” Murphy says.
Destiny 2 has a heart for both successful and lackluster anglers. That’s why this week, as part of the Bungie Day celebrations, there is a new fishing perk: the Luck Week! And of course, the activities are rotating as well. MeinMMO provides a weekly overview as always.
This is happening this week: After the fishing activity quickly lost popularity, Bungie is now helping out a bit. That’s why this week there will be a bonus on Nessus, in the EDZ, and in the Throne World that doubles the catch rate for exotic fish.
With this, even the most unsuccessful or lackluster anglers should have the opportunity to quickly snag the three necessary blades required to complete the “Whetstone” encounter in diving missions of the Methane Sea. There is supposed to be an Exo-weapon called “Sullied Tool” hiding in the Veist Forge.
In addition to the increased fishing luck, there will also be bonus reputation ranks and rewards in all three playlists. And from this week, the gilding of the title “Top Performer” will finally be possible, as the Top Performer node will finally be unlocked.

Crucible – This is the rotating PvP activity
The two modes Momentum Control and Clash are running this week in PvP.
Endgame: Raid Challenges and Dungeon Rotation
Farmable endgame on a weekly rotation: In the further endgame, the Legacy Rotations await. In this, both the rotating raid and the rotating dungeon are farmable. This means you can complete the individual encounters repeatedly to obtain various items and complete your collection. Including possible exotics available in these contents.
The weekly Legacy raid is Riven in “Last Wish” with the Exo fusion rifle “1000 Voices”
Additionally, there is extra top loot at the dungeon “Duality” with the Exo sword “Heartshadow”
Bungie will further expand this activity rotation of contents starting from Season 22. Then players can not only play raids and dungeons as “Legacy”, but also old exotic missions. This way, the circle is continually closing until someday all Destiny contents are probably back in the game.
Calus grants you the “Heartshadow” in Duality – but only if you are lucky
Weekly Activities
With the weekly reset, several activities and challenges have been updated again, offering players a variety of rewards and progress, making them better guardians through repetition.
In the new Season 21, guardians must dive to the ocean floor of Titan, as it is infested with Taken and the Hive. They search for something at the bottom of its methane ocean. This promises to unveil ancient secrets and further information about the origins of the Witness.

Do you know annoying scam calls on the phone? A man has developed an app with ChatGPT that drives phishing callers insane.
Our cover image is a symbolic image.
Every now and then, one receives calls from unknown people: They pose as police officers or bank employees, warning or threatening about some dangers. Such scam calls are disturbing and dangerous.
A man from California has developed a tool that is supposed to keep scammers on the line to waste their time. His app or service is based on ChatGPT.
Meanwhile, he has thousands of customers who pay him 25 euros each year for this service. On average, he earns more than 50,000 euros a year from it. He does not disclose how many customers he has exactly.
Man develops chatbot and now has thousands of customers
Roger Anderson runs a subscription service called Jolly Roger. The chatbot answers the call and then tries to stall for time. He explains how it works with an example given to the Wall Street Journal (behind the paywall):
A chatbot named ‘Whitey’ Whitebeard, which is based on ChatGPT, answers a call from a recorded female voice that issues a warning about an account at Bank of America.
When the chatbot responds, the telemarketer’s call is forwarded to an actual person who tries to talk to the chatbot about credit card consolidation.
Since the caller is apparently not working for Bank of America, he received only silly answers that prolonged the conversation.
The scammer eventually hung up out of frustration.
Why does this work? Anderson explained that his system is trained to make the chatbot sound like a real person on the phone. Therefore, scammers assume they are actually speaking with a real person.
Anderson told WSJ that his chatbots use a combination of preset expressions and topic-specific responses that are fed through a voice clone, so the caller thinks he or she is actually speaking with a real person.
For a scamming person, it is annoying and time-consuming; other people can certainly be protected by such a chatbot. Even today, enough people still fall for scam calls or people who rely on the gullibility of others. These people lose a lot of money, which they will never see again.
Such nasty people exist everywhere: A woman has now gone too far. She has deceived a lot of people because she wanted to buy new Apple products. She relied on a very similar scheme as those scammers on the phone:
In Pokémon GO, it is always a highlight when a new Pokémon suddenly appears in the vicinity. Then the collector’s instinct kicks in – it’s just a shame when you can’t leave.
In Pokémon GO, you can do all sorts of things. Fight against Rockets, catch legendary monsters in raids, walk your buddy, hatch eggs, and so on… and I think all of that has its charm, no question.
But my favorite aspect of the game has always been the simple act of walking around and seeing if there are any undiscovered monsters lurking somewhere.
When a small shadow at the bottom right of the Near tab reveals that something is hiding somewhere that I don’t know yet – I get fired up.
Over the years, however, this has become increasingly rare. Pokémon GO is now almost seven years old, and I’ve been playing since 2018. I’ve seen and caught a lot during that time. Moreover, large new waves of monsters are rare. Fresh Pokémon tend to appear sporadically in events, or they aren’t even released as wild spawns, but appear elsewhere in the game.
This means: The Undiscovered shadow appears less and less frequently for me. So I was even more pleased when, shortly after the start of the season Hidden Gems, something appeared that I didn’t know again.
Only: Until today, I had no opportunity to catch it. And slowly, I almost feel tricked by the game.

A mysterious eel swims in front of my nose – But never when it suits me
This is my problem: A few weeks ago, I noticed that an eel-shaped monster appeared near my apartment. At first, I was really excited because I thought it was the Perlu evolution Saganabiss, and thus the last monster I was missing in the Hoenn Dex.
But since that one doesn’t spawn in the wild, it can’t be. However, I have figured out that it is likely the Zapplardin evolution Zapplalek. Not quite as unusual, but still rare enough that I don’t have it yet, let alone enough candies.
But the nasty thing about it: For some reason, the eel only appears near me around 09:00 or 10:00 in the morning. The rest of the day, it cheekily shines through its absence.
Unfortunately, that’s a time when I usually can’t just go for a Pokémon GO walk. After all, work needs to be done – and I fear the eel knows that. My hope that it would eventually appear at better times is being ignored by it.
The eel greets me regularly at work
Instead, the monster regularly grins at me from just enough distance in the morning that it does not spawn on the map. Eventually, it disappears again, and the opportunity is gone.
So all I can do is hope that it will someday miss the time and show up after work. Or I’ll have to go out during the day… Sorry boss!
The game with the shadow: Do you know this situation too? When an unknown, perhaps even rare monster suddenly appears nearby, and you want to drop everything to catch it? What was it for you? Tell us in the comments!
Icon and Hero cards have always been among the best cards in the FIFA series in FIFA Ultimate Team for years. And we firmly expect similar cards for FIFA 23 successor EA Sports FC. But which players are eligible?
These are Icons and Hero cards in FIFA: For a long time, FUT only had Gold and Special cards alongside Icon cards that represented the best players in football history. These traditionally came in 3 different strengths, with the best versions being extremely popular. Particularly the cards of Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Zidane, or Gullit have always been highly sought after.
In FIFA 22, Hero cards were added, which also brought cards for former football players into the game. However, the Heroes are more about club legends than absolute superstars. Included are, among others, Ginola, Yaya Touré, Lars Ricken, or Rudi Völler.
We have looked around to find out which Icon or Hero cards the community wishes for the FIFA successor.
That’s why Agüero deserves an Icon card: Sergio Agüero is a true legend of the Premier League. The nimble striker with an outstanding goal instinct scored an incredible 184 goals in his 10-year tenure at Manchester City. In addition, the Argentine proudly represented his country 101 times, with a yield of 41 goals.
At the end of FIFA 21, Agüero received a really strong card, which could resemble a future Icon or Hero card. He definitely deserves it.
Agüero’s last card in FIFA 21.

That’s why Robben deserves an Icon card: Already in 2021, Robben, who was known for his dangerous dribbles and his incredibly fine left foot, ended his career. Time and again, the former Bayern star scored dream goals and was one of the best wingers in the world during his active time.
So it’s only logical that the Dutchman should urgently receive an Icon card in EA Sports FC.
Robben’s last card in FIFA 21.
Franck Ribéry
That’s why Ribéry deserves an Icon card: How grand would it be if Ribéry could also get a new Icon or Hero card in EA Sports FC, alongside Robben? One could finally reunite the legendary Bundesliga duo and go on a goal spree with the French dribbling legend.
Ribéry’s last card in FIFA 23.
Francesco Totti
That’s why Totti deserves an Icon card: For a long time, fans have been wishing for an Icon card for the Italian striker. After all, Totti ended his glorious career in 2017 at AS Roma, to which he remained loyal throughout his entire active career.
Totti’s last card in FIFA 17.
In the Italian Serie A, he scored 250 goals, adding 140 more assists. Moreover, he was part of the Italian national team that won the World Cup in Germany in 2006.
Alfredo Di Stéfano
That’s why Di Stéfano deserves an Icon card: The name Alfredo Di Stéfano keeps appearing in votings for new icons. And rightly so, because the Argentine, who was active between the 1940s and the mid-60s, was among the best players in the world at that time. Among other things, he played for Real Madrid between 1953 and 1964, where he scored an astonishing 216 goals.
There he played alongside Ferenc Puskás, with whom he formed a legendary striker duo. Puskás joined the icons in FIFA 21 that players could use in Ultimate Team. Now it’s time for Di Stéfano to follow him.
What about Franz Beckenbauer and Oliver Kahn?
In the annual votings, these two German legends always appear at the top. However, both had exclusive contracts with Konami in recent years and were therefore only seen in PES or eFootball.
Whether that might change this year is unfortunately not known at this time.

Pioner is a survival MMORPG that focuses on PvE and lets you fight for survival in a post-apocalyptic world.
What kind of game is this? Pioner is a survival MMORPG from the Russian indie developer GFA Games, played from a first-person perspective, focusing on PvE, and is set to be released on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.
The main goal of Pioner is to survive on a Soviet island in a post-apocalyptic world. To do this, you can join various factions such as bandits and cultists and complete quests for them.
During the game, you will explore the island where you are trapped since it was cut off from the mainland by an anomaly and encounter abandoned settlements, secret research stations, and various beasts like giant spiders, mutated zombies, and bloodthirsty hellhounds.
In addition to PvE, which is the main focus of the game, there will also be specific areas where PvP is possible.
What does Pioner offer gameplay-wise? PvE players can look forward to over 50 quests, dungeons, and plenty of dangers that want to make survival difficult for you. In addition, the game allows you to learn more about the background of the previously experienced apocalypse in the main story.
As typical for survival games, crafting will also play a role. Additionally, there will be a range of different firearms that are visually based on real-life models and can be customized using weapon modifications.
PvP exists in Pioner in special areas like the Shadowlands, where you can face other players alone or in groups and, if successful, take their loot and equipment.
There is also to be a clan system where you can join other players for both PvE and PvP.
In a new trailer, you can catch a glimpse of the gameplay of the survival MMORPG:

Pioner finally shows gameplay again in the new trailer
What does the new gameplay show? In the new trailer, Pioner gives us some brief insights into the world and various regions of the game. Additionally, the MMORPG shows us some battles with ranged and melee weapons against various creatures and human opponents.
In general, we get a good impression of the game world and the mysteries it holds.

The new MMORPG Loftia (PC, Mac) focuses on a cozy atmosphere, a colorful world, and a bunch of side quests. At first glance, it resembles Palia, but Loftia brings its own unique spin. We at MeinMMO summarize.
What kind of game is this? Loftia will be an MMORPG that makes the side quests of other MMORPGs the main focus. It falls into the category of “Cozy Games,” including hits like Animal Crossing, Fae Farm, or Stardew Valley.
All these games aim to provide you with a good feeling and create “coziness.” They aim to remove stress from the gaming experience and focus solely on the positive. However, most manage this only in single-player or co-op.
The project’s founder herself tells on Reddit that she has spent a long time as a hardcore raider in various MMOs, has always played competitively, and loves games that focus on combat systems. But now she herself needs a break from that, so she developed Loftia out of her own need and hopes that more people share this sentiment.
She wants to mix Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, World of Warcraft, and MapleStory. To do that, she relies on exciting features.
Start video
Stardew Valley meets WoW – Official Trailer for the Cozy-MMO Loftia
What are Loftia’s features? The MMORPG wants to completely do without a combat system; however, there will be some form of “raids.” Here’s what it looks like and what else is coming:
The game takes place in Loftia City, a flying city in the air. There, you will work together to rebuild the city and lead it into a better future.
In gameplay, everything you do is aimed at constructing large community projects together, which will then change the game world for everyone.
Of course, there is also farming, because what would a cozy game be without a farm?
“Adventures” is the Loftia version of dungeons and raids. This is content for 3 to 10 players, where you must overcome instanced challenges. As examples, the developers mention It Takes Two, Fall Guys, and the shrines from the latest The Legend of Zelda.
Guilds will also play a significant role in Loftia; here, they are called “Clubs.”
Gathering and crafting are also important in Loftia and are a core element of the MMORPG.
Of course, there will also be a big focus on customizing your character and your housing.
The world is divided into areas where 150 players can fit in simultaneously.
First tests are not coming until 2024
Since when has Loftia been in development? The MMORPG has been in development for about a year; according to the developers’ blog, work on the game began in July 2022. Back then, there were fewer than 5 people involved, but now more than 20 are working on the project.
They also say that many employees on Loftia already have experience in game development and have contributed to both indie and AAA projects. However, since the developers’ website does not provide surnames, we could not verify this (via Loftia).
When can you play? Loftia does not yet have a release date. The game is still in the early stages of development and will likely be some time away. Nevertheless, the developers are talking about starting the first alpha tests next year.
How to participate in these playtests is also already known. It’s quite simple; you just have to go to loftia.gg, scroll down once, and put your email on the “Mailing List.” Then you will be notified as soon as it starts.
Loftia will initially be released only on PC and Macs but is expected to come to the Switch and “other consoles” later. There are no further details on this yet.
What do you think of Loftia? Are you excited about an MMORPG in a cozy style? Do you think the game is distinct enough from Palia through the adventures and community projects? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments here on MeinMMO.
It seems that especially casual players are thrilled, who have taken their time for the game:
The story and campaign are considered excellent, especially by Diablo standards
those who don’t play 18 hours a day have enough to do as well
The difficulty level seems just right, harder than Diablo 3, but not as unfair as Diablo 1 or 2
The most interesting story around the release was how the MMO streamer Asmongold exaggerated and ended up in the hospital. Most players, however, are interested in tips and tricks for the game, especially builds for their classes. You will find our Tier List with the best builds in Diablo 4 on MeinMMO:
Control effects from opponents are too strong and urgently need adjustment.
The class balancing is still not ideal, with build diversity in the high-end area very limited. This is also confirmed by our colleague André Baumgartner from GameStar, who already has 2 characters at level 100.
Additionally, there are smaller demands for quality improvements such as more space, especially for gems, or fixes for annoying bugs. The news that crossplay is enabled appears in chat about every few seconds.
In my conclusion after the test, little has changed. Diablo 4 plays excellently, even though I now agree with many ideas from the community:

Diablo 4: Many improvements, Season 1 and expansions in the future
What has been improved? Since the release, Blizzard has been diligently working on improvements and adjustments. Initially, there were mainly many nerfs. In a conversation, the developers explained, why nerfs are “for the best of the game”.
Overall, the dungeons have been adjusted to be relatively similar, so farming should be reasonably equal everywhere. Classes also have only a few differences in power outside of the high-end area.
A very large adjustment to the balance for all classes, as well as many quality improvements, were already introduced in the first major patch a few weeks after release. In addition to buffs and more pleasant nightmare dungeons, there were over 60 bug fixes:
What comes next? We already know that Season 1 will start between mid and late July. A specific date and more information should be provided in the next dev update on July 6 at 8:00 PM German time. You will find all of that on MeinMMO.
What will specifically be included in Season 1 is still unknown. However, we do know what seasons are generally supposed to bring:
new legendary aspects
special mechanics for the season
new story quests that are standalone and not related to the main story
Seasons are expected to be released roughly every 3 months. Blizzard has also confirmed that expansions for Diablo 4 will be coming. These will continue the main story and are expected to include new classes. One of them is already very likely:
Marcel “MontanaBlack” Eris (35) is one of the biggest streamers on German Twitch. It has almost become normal to launch a product or two. Now, the streamer revealed his secret project, but the reactions are rather mixed.
What is behind the “passion project”? MontanaBlack has repeatedly talked about a secret project over the past few weeks. He has been working on it for over 2 years, investing all his savings, over 1.5 million euros.
The mysterious project was also one of the reasons the Twitch streamer stated for not being able to switch to the competing platform Kick. Viewers speculated what could be hidden behind the secrecy: Disposable e-cigarettes, which have been speculated about for a while, or even a streaming platform of his own?
In a video from July 2, 2023, MontanaBlack finally revealed what he has been working on for the past few years.

Career and Life of MontanaBlack in 2 Minutes: What Makes Him Unique?
So what has it become? Under the name “Gönrgy”, the new energy drink from MontanaBlack will be available in stores starting July 20. There will be 3 varieties, supposedly sugar-free according to the video, with plant extracts and vitamins. “So that you can enjoy it with a clear conscience,” the streamer said.
How are the reactions? They are quite mixed. Among the comments on YouTube, there is much support for MontanaBlack: The trained retail salesman and “attic rascal” has come a long way. Several fans write that they wish him success.
From others, there is biting mockery, joking: Finally, an influencer is bringing a drink to market. Collaborations with major brands or even products from content creators are not exactly new:
There are also sugary drinks from rapper Capital Bra as well as Shirin David and Katja Krasavice
MontanaBlack himself recently said that he would have liked to launch his own iced tea under the name “MonTea”, but then “every Tom, Dick, and Harry” launched their own iced tea, and he got tired of it (via YouTube).
Why it was specifically an energy drink, the streamer did not reveal. However, he did say that he would not just lend his name to the product, but that it was made with a lot of love – and money – and comes from the heart.
The video, including a flight in the “gönrgy” helicopter to the tasting in Frankfurt, you can watch here. It is currently in second place in the trends on German YouTube.

What bothers people? On Twitter, the mockery continues. There, users are particularly puzzled about the name of the energy drink. The neologism from “gönnen” and “Energy” raises questions: Is there not a second “n” missing? Or is it pronounced like “Döner”?
We have summarized some reactions here for you, so you don’t have to use up your daily tweet limit (via GameStar):
“Despite such a long lead time, no one in the marketing team noticed that an ‘n’ is missing in the name to match the desired pronunciation.” (via Twitter)
“I also find the name terrible… Which person who doesn’t know Monte goes to the supermarket, sees a can with ‘GönRgy’ on it and thinks: ‘Oh great, I’ll buy that’?” (via Twitter)
“2.5 years passion project for the name Gönrgy.” (via Twitter)
“The name could come from a second grader” (via Twitter)
Jens “Knossi” Knossalla and Maximilian “Trymacs” Stemmler, MontanaBlack’s Twitch colleagues, have meanwhile launched their own pizza chain. The first pizzas were even delivered personally by the streamers, with surprising results:
On the set of the action and sci-fi hit “Demolition Man“ a female actress apparently had such a bad time with her colleague Sylvester Stallone that she was replaced after just a few days.
Demolition Man is a sci-fi thriller from 1993 directed by Marco Brambilla. Action hero and Schwarzenegger rival Sylvester Stallone plays the thawed cop John Spartan, who must stop the gangster Simon Pheonix, played by Wesley Snipes.
Sandra Bullock stars as Lenina Huxley in the film. However, a different actress was originally cast for the role.
Here you can see a trailer for Demolition Man:

Demolition Man – Trailer for the action movie starring Sylvester Stallone
„They were like oil and water“
Originally, Lori Petty was supposed to take on the role of Lenina Huxley. She is known from films like A League of Their Own (1992), Tank Girl (1995) or from the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black (2013-2019).
However, after just three days on set, Lori Petty was fired. According to Entertainment Weekly, a member of the production stated: “Warner Bros. was not very satisfied with her first scenes. They thought they could do better with someone else.”
Here you see a picture of Lori Petty in the film Point Break (1991)
This left the dismissal of the actress rather framed as a creative decision of the production.
However, the actress herself saw the reason for this in the poor collaboration with her co-star Sylvester Stallone, with whom she apparently could not get along at all: “Sly [Stallone] and I were like oil and water,” she described her relationship with the action star (via Entertainment Weekly).
Sometimes it can be difficult to work with a new acting colleague. For instance, Harrison Ford also intimidated the new Captain America at first, as you can read here with our colleagues from Gamestar.
As a new cast for the role, Sandra Bullock was cast, who was still relatively unknown in Hollywood at that time.
Demolition Man ultimately became an important film in Sandra Bullock’s career. After smaller roles, such as in the film Hangmen (1987), the sci-fi blockbuster was her first major Hollywood job that increased her fame.
The following year, she then had her big breakthrough with the action thriller Speed (1994), alongside co-star Keanu Reeves.
Also, on the set of Terminator, an actress initially had absolutely no desire to work with her colleague:
A trailer announces the anime ‘Suicide Squad Isekai’ featuring Harley Quinn and the Joker. Many fans are surprised by the news, but praise the style of the new series.
Suicide Squad Isekai will be the result of a collaboration between Warner Bros. Japan and WIT Studio. The Japanese anime studio is known for productions like Attack on Titan and Spy x Family.
A prominent role in the series will likely be taken by Joker’s sidekick Harley Quinn, who is featured in both the trailer and the Twitter announcement from DC.

Suicide Squad Isekai – Announcement Trailer for the new DC anime
Harley Quinn and the Suicide Squad invade a fantasy world
What does the trailer show? Isekai means “another world” in Japanese and refers to an anime genre where characters are thrown into a foreign environment and learn to survive there.
Accordingly, the trailer shows not only the familiar, dark Gotham setting but also how Harley and Joker are transported to a magical world filled with dragons and pig-human hybrids.
How does the community react? On YouTube, many users have a positive reaction to the announcement trailer for Suicide Squad: Isekai. They are particularly surprised by the collaboration between Warner Bros. and the Japanese animation studio.
They also did not expect the combination of fantasy and superheroes. Nonetheless, they praise the art style, and some say they will watch the anime as soon as it’s released:
Others, however, wonder where the rest of the Suicide Squad is, as only the two characters Harley Quinn and Joker are visible in the trailer.
daophuongvyuyen2161: ‘The art style looks amazing, and the idea of combining Suicide Squad and Isekai is quite bizarre, but it’s worth waiting for.’
@susyguy4758: ‘This is the collaboration I never expected.’
@solacee4327: ‘I’m really looking forward to it, but I need to see more, the concept is appealing to me. But where’s the squad? You can’t have a Suicide Squad without a squad.’
@Visual_Y: ‘I never thought I would see a Suicide Squad anime, but I’m all in.’
When does Suicide Squad Isekai come out? The series is set to premiere next year on HBO Max. However, it’s not yet known when that will be or when the anime will be available in Germany.

Harry Potter: Magic Awakened was released in 2021 in China and is a mobile MMORPG for Android and iOS. But those who want to click away annoyed already, should take their time. Because in the first reviews, the game is surprisingly well received. It also includes many elements that fans missed in Hogwarts Legacy.
What kind of game is this exactly? In Magic Awakened, you create a character and visit the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry about 10 years after the books. You start together with Hagrid in the famous Diagon Alley to gather all the important equipment.
As a first-year student, you then participate in the typical house sorting ritual (you can influence the outcome yourself) and meet well-known teachers like Minerva McGonagall, who is now the headmistress, or Filius Flitwick.
You can explore the castle completely freely and continuously encounter other players who are also roaming around. This makes the school experience much more lively than in many other “Harry Potter” games. Additionally, you frequently stumble upon dangers during your explorations, such as a troll that you must then fight.
The combat system is turn-based, and your positioning plays an important role.
You collect over 70 different cards during gameplay, through which you learn new spells or upgrade old ones.
In general, you follow a main campaign but can also complete side quests. This includes dancing at a festival. There is also the Forbidden Forest, a kind of roguelike dungeon. You can enter this alone or with up to 10 players.
There is an alchemy system through which you can brew potions.
There are PvP duels in 1v1 or 2v2 against other players.
You can even participate in a mini-game of Quidditch – a feature that was removed from Hogwarts Legacy.
The entire gaming experience is voiced in English and features German texts and subtitles.
The game was developed by NetEase in collaboration with Warner Bros. Games. It was supposed to be released here in 2022, but the release was delayed. Since June, you can play it for free.

Harry Potter: Magic Awakened – Official Gameplay Trailer
Good game, despite gacha system and story flaws
How is the game received? Surprisingly well. The website Android Police headlines in their review: “No joke, it’s really good” and praises especially the large fan service. Everywhere there are references to the books, as a fan you know every spell, and it is clear that the game was indeed made by fans for fans.
However, there are also isolated criticisms. The story is said to be very strongly trimmed towards Harry Potter himself, for example with Hagrid’s initial visit or the fight against the troll. Therefore, one should not be too picky with the lore.
Further criticism is directed at the gacha system. You can buy many spells through a random loot box. This could have negative effects on the PvP duels. However, it is not clear how significant the influence on the endgame is.
Other testers were also positively surprised by Magic Awakened. The YouTuber dagilp_lbh started a Let’s Play of it, titled THIS GAME is SO MUCH BETTER than expected! The French website Jeuxvideo rated the game with 75/100 in their test.
What do player reviews say? Harry Potter: Magic Awakened can be downloaded for free from the Play Store or the App Store. There, some players have already given their ratings:
In the Play Store, the game has a score of 4.4 stars with over 46,000 reviews and more than one million downloads.
In the App Store, it even reaches 4.7 stars with only 129 ratings.
I myself have only played for about 30 minutes so far, but those were very entertaining.
Have you had any experience with the new Harry Potter-MMORPG yet? Or are you generally put off by mobile games?
MeinMMO demon Cortyn has been completely immersed in Final Fantasy 16 for a week. Now, extensive details are revealed about how good the game really is – and who it disappoints.
As fate would have it, my vacation this year coincided with the release of Final Fantasy XVI. On opening day, I reduced my life-sustaining functions to the consumption of energy drinks and cut off all communication with the outside world to fully concentrate on the game.
After a good 70 hours of gameplay, I was “finished” and am now ready to report in detail and explain to you exactly what you have been missing if you have not yet given the game a chance.
So make yourself some tea and lean back in your chair – because I have a lot to tell. But don’t worry: I will keep spoilers to an absolute minimum without revealing important details about the story.
Final Fantasy – The great game series was in a crisis
Excluding the MMORPG, Final Fantasy was in a crisis. Even though many are starting to idealize Final Fantasy XV with the lens of nostalgia, I can still remember well what an absurd chaos the game was. Not only was it impossible to understand the story unless you had seen a movie and read accompanying comics (which were partly patched into the game later so that you could even grasp what is going on), but there were also bugs that prevented you from reaching the end of the game.
It also came to pass that Final Fantasy XV was largely just a “Boyband takes a road trip” simulator, where you spent most of the time cruising through the pretty, but rather boring game world. There were no strong female characters, emotions did not resonate, and the open-world approach had done much, but certainly not good for the game.
Indeed, Final Fantasy XV was already an attempt at salvation. The three-part story of its predecessor, Final Fantasy XIII (with XIII-2 and XIII-3), could not convince many and was so absurd and full of “anime clichés” that long-time fans completely lost their love for Final Fantasy.
Accordingly, my expectations for the next installment of the series were quite low. Thanks to the developers, I was pleasantly surprised.
FF XVI has restored trust in the series – despite so much being different.
The story – A world full of magic on the brink
Let me first roughly describe the basic setting of the world.
FF16 takes place on the twin continents of “Ash” and “Storm”, which are quite close to each other. The largest monuments, which can be seen from a distance, are the so-called “Mother Crystals”. Various kingdoms, empires, or republics have developed near these Mother Crystals.
From the mines of the Mother Crystals, smaller crystals are extracted, which are then distributed throughout the realm. They allow every citizen of the world – who can afford crystals – to wield magic.
Magic is firmly rooted in the daily lives of people and has essentially been so “since forever.” It goes so far that most people would not even know how to bring a smithy fire to the necessary temperature without magical crystals.
Shiva – one of the “Eikons,” who can freeze entire regions.
At the same time, there are the Dominants. These are fate-chosen individuals who are capable of transforming their own bodies into powerful creatures, the so-called Eikons. This transformation comes with physical and psychological issues but grants almost limitless power that ordinary people – whether with crystals or not – cannot resist.
In most cases, Eikons are not used in battles. In the world of FF16, Dominants with their Eikons are comparable to nuclear weapons. They are a means of threat and intimidation. Should one side actually use a Dominant for attack, the other side would react accordingly, leading to devastating losses for both realms. Thus, there is essentially a tacit agreement not to use Eikons.
At the same time, the Dominants with their Eikons are also a worthwhile target. If a realm succeeds, say through assassins, in killing the enemy’s Dominant in their human form before they can transform, the realm would lose its leverage and could be easily annihilated.
Politics play an important role – as many realms have differing interests.
The overarching threat is the so-called “Blight.” A disease that inflicts the land and poisons once fertile areas, draining magic and shrinking living space.
The great realms thus argue over the dominion of the Mother Crystals and fertile land, with the latter becoming increasingly scarce, which drives the rulers to attacks.
In such a world, you step into the role of Clive Rosfield. The son of the Lord of the realm of Rosaria. In terms of size, Rosaria is rather insignificant, but Clive’s brother Joshua is the next Dominant of the Eikon Phoenix. Following tradition, Clive vows to protect Joshua with his life and is granted a part of the Phoenix’s power in return.
The story is told through countless dialogues and cutscenes. For over 10 hours, you simply observe, watch, and listen. The story unfolds over a span of several decades. You experience Clive in his youth, as a young adult, and several years later.
This makes Final Fantasy 16 the perfect “sofa game” where you can just be a passive viewer and enjoy the story while a friend, roommate, or family member plays.
Even without a gamepad in hand, Final Fantasy 16 creates a pull similar to that of series like “Game of Thrones.” And with that, we come to the next topic.
Oh, and before I forget: There is a German voiceover too if you don’t want to play in English or Japanese.
Sexuality and nudity occur only in a handful of scenes – but they hit hard.
“Game of Thrones” wherever you look
I am by no means the first person to see many parallels between Final Fantasy XVI and Game of Thrones. But it’s not a huge stretch, as the developers have long confirmed that they watched the series and were heavily inspired by it to get a better feel for the interests of a Western audience.
The inspiration is most evident in the sheer number of political players that appear in the game. Half a dozen realms, each fighting for dominance and each representing different values, religions, and political structures. Truly understanding who belongs to which realm, what the goals and intentions are takes a while.
How close some characters are to their Game of Thrones inspirations can sometimes be absurdly obvious.
Spoiled children with too much power were already a good idea in Game of Thrones. Right?
The protagonist Clive Rosfield is basically Jon Snow. Not only does he look like you took actor Kit Harrington and zapped him with a Japanization beam, but also in terms of story and character, there are countless parallels. Need some examples?
Clive is loved by his father and brother, but his mother sees him as a bitter annoyance, a disgrace to the family.
Clive has a dog as a companion, who turns out to be a particularly rare wolf species and follows him loyally.
Clive must join a group that takes on particularly dangerous tasks, but is rather mocked and mistreated by the rest of the world.
But the parallels do not begin and end with Clive.
FF16 has its very own “Hodor”. A lovable but somewhat mentally challenged giant who constantly hangs on to his “Nana”.
Despicable children are elevated to the throne far too soon thanks to their mother and are endowed with so much power that Joffrey Baratheon could only bow in recognition.
There are also dashing guys who are simply too flawless for this world – and, of course, the most handsomest knight is gay.
They were so handsome, they just had to be gay.
Only on incest is avoided. At least if you don’t interpret the rules too strongly.
A harsh, brutal world
To continue with parallels to Game of Thrones: Final Fantasy XVI does not do things halfway when it comes to seriousness and cruelty. While JRPGs usually avoid a realistic depiction of brutality, FF16 pulls all the stops without exaggerating. This results in a mature and not child-friendly game world.
Blood sprays in many scenes and sticks to the characters.
Heads, hands, and arms are severed from the body and fly across the screen in slow motion while the characters open their eyes wide in pain and shock.
Slavery, abuse, and torture are ongoing themes.
Rape and other sexual assaults are hinted at multiple times in the game and once even unmistakably implied.
Prostitutes and brothels exist in almost every town, usually accompanied by witty remarks.
I had to smile when I heard a character loudly scream “FUCK!” in a modern Final Fantasy for the first time. Cursing and swearing occur and contribute atmospherically to the roughness of the world.
Characters often curse. Besides “Fuck,” there are also coarse insults.
The combat system – Unconventional, but better than ever
Like many of you, I still associate Final Fantasy with a turn-based combat system. But if we are honest: We have to say goodbye to that since the series hasn’t had it for over 22 years. Since the release of Final Fantasy X, the world simply moved on.
FFXVI relies on an active action combat system, similar to what you might know from Devil May Cry or Bayonetta. This means you must closely observe your enemies and memorize their attack patterns to avoid and evade their attacks at the right moment.
Dodging or parrying is usually only necessary for tougher opponents. Because against lesser foes like individual soldiers, orcs, or goblins, you usually hold them in a “stunlock” with combos. These enemies only pose a real danger when they appear in large numbers and you dive into a larger crowd.
The approach changes significantly once you encounter tougher mid-level bosses, larger enemies, or bosses. These have not only a significantly more stable health bar but also a second gauge, namely their will (“stagger” bar). While you dodge the devastating attacks from these enemies, you use the few seconds between attacks to deplete the will gauge. Once this drops to 0, the big bad guy collapses and becomes completely defenseless for a short period of time. Combos inflict significantly increased damage during these seconds.

Final Fantasy XVI – State of Play June 2022 Dominance Trailer | PS5 Games
This creates a natural “flow” in battles, especially with larger foes. You dodge, launch only short attacks with the sword and a bit of magic from a distance until you break their will, unleashing your most powerful spells before the cycle begins anew.
Despite the action-heavy combat system, you can customize Clive quite extensively, at least after the first few hours of gameplay. He starts primarily as a melee fighter with fire attacks, but you can also opt for spells with long cooldowns, leading most fights from (seemingly) safe distances.
Different abilities also have different roles in battle. Not only is there a distinction between “single-target” and “area attack” or “melee” and “ranged combat,” but there are also different types of damage. For example, you can use the powers of the Eikon Shiva to quickly break the opponent’s will, while the abilities of Bahamut deplete health points.
However, from about 40 abilities, you can only take 12 into battle, of which 6 are freely selectable.
“Over-skill” is actually not possible. All points spent on learning abilities can be refunded for free outside of combat, allowing you to simply choose a different combination.
By the way, the action combat system also ensures that a lot of “classic” baggage does not exist. Status effects like poison, blindness, zombie, sleep, berserker, or petrification simply do not exist. So you don’t have to worry about always having 20 antidotes, 10 golden needles, and 30 echo herbs in your inventory.
Status effects exist only in two varieties and only apply to enemies, and even these occur extremely rarely. Some spellcasters put shields on allies that can only be broken by magical attacks, while others grant their colleagues a strength buff that allows them to strike more firmly. That’s it.
Blocking attacks can only be learned late in the game. However, you will then also have to forgo other abilities.
Different magic elements only exist in the story of the game. It does not matter whether you attack a fire elemental with frost or fire – both inflict the same amount of damage. There are no special affinities or vulnerabilities.
You also never have to worry about your companions. They fight and act on their own and cannot be defeated. Only your dog can receive manual commands.
In typical FF manner, there is again a “Limit Break” mode. Here, you heal slowly while your attacks do more damage, and you become harder to stun.
Healing is also a topic. Because the potions you can use per battle are limited. So you can’t keep getting hit by the boss and simply “heal through” indefinitely. That would, of course, make the game too easy.
“Easy mode” for story fans
If all this sounds too stressful, you can actually simplify the combat system to complete banality. Clive starts with 4 amulets in his inventory that activate a sort of “easy mode” for the game when worn. For example, with one chain, you can just smash the Square button and still unleash the most complex combos, which would otherwise require multiple buttons to be pressed. Another amulet ensures that time briefly freezes every time before you would take damage, giving you more time to dodge. Another piece of jewelry lets you automatically use potions when Clive’s health drops below a critical threshold.
I strongly advise against using these amulets. Firstly, to keep a shred of “gamer honor,” and secondly, because they simplify the combat system so massively that absolutely no skill is required, and no fun in the game will arise.
These simplifying amulets are okay if you only want to experience the story. But in that case, you could probably just watch the game as a spectator on the sofa while your friend or partner fights against rampaging Chocobos, pretty hot Garuda harpies, or the spoiled prince from the neighboring realm.
The best boss battles ever in a game
The spectacular highlights of the story are the boss fights, and they are staged in a way I’ve never seen before in a video game.
As a prime example, I have embedded a video of the fight against “Garuda.” This is the first “real” boss fight in the game. The video is a minor story spoiler, but it occurs very early in the game, and you basically have the knowledge from playing the demo (the fight starts at 5:13):

The music with epic choirs, the animations of the bosses, the intensity of the drama, and the cinematic presentation are unparalleled and so far unmatched for me.
Despite the usual “firework of effects” that Final Fantasy puts up with numerous spell effects, the battles are always well readable and the intentions of the bosses are recognizable.
The little flaw here is that the “Eikon versus Eikon” battles are significantly easier in terms of difficulty than the battles as Clive. This is primarily because when controlling the Eikons, you have significantly more health points and are much less likely to get caught in a combo from enemies. This is also due to the fact that the particularly devastating attacks of enemy Eikons are signaled clearly (and visually strikingly) so that it is almost an art not to dodge them.
However, the bombastic music, especially during these fights, ensures that you hold the gamepad tightly filled with adrenaline and fight tense as if you were facing off against a boss from the Dark Souls series.
The best feature for story games
No question, the story and world of Final Fantasy XVI are grand and complex. Keeping track can be difficult here, especially if you don’t “binge” play the game. If you only put in 2-3 hours on weekends, you might quickly feel overwhelmed and simply be confounded by the number of characters. Who was again the blonde femme fatale? Who was the big muscle-bound bald guy? Where did Clive know the woman who insults him all the time from?
This could be overwhelming. But it isn’t. Because during all sequences you can simply hold down the large trackpad button and access the “Active Lore” overview. Here you see all characters in the current scene and can request more information about each character. This information even updates in real-time as Clive gains new knowledge or intrigues are uncovered.
This feature works not only for characters but also for terms and locations. Have you forgotten what the holy realm of Sanbreque is? What exactly are the Dominants, and how do they differ from the bearers? Whenever specialized terms are relevant to understanding a scene, you can check these immediately.
Later on, this feature is even supplemented. In the central refuge, you have an educated political advisor. Depending on your progress, she has different lessons for you. In voiced cutscenes, she shows you on the world map what has happened in the last few days and how the realms have fared. How were the troops moved? Which leader has fallen? What is the political situation within each realm? Where is instability likely to arise?
You can access all information about characters and their connections at any time after the “introduction”.
These sequences can be watched multiple times if needed, but you can also track events from the entire game up to that point. With a timeline, you can see exactly where Clive was at what time and what troop movements, plots, or political intrigues were taking place simultaneously in other locations.
I’m aware that these features exist only because the world of FFXVI is so grand and complex and that it in some ways just represents a “stopgap” solution. However, I liked this feature so much, and it should be a relief for those with less time for our beloved hobby that I will no longer want to miss in any complex story game.
If all this hasn’t been enough for you, you can also speak with a story collector in the hideout. This acts as a codex and offers even more information on various topics in the world.
Story fans who want to dive deep will find plenty to enjoy here. Everyone else can largely ignore these features.
I have read in comments time and again that Final Fantasy XVI apparently does without all the “Final Fantasy bullshit” that Japanese games often bring. By this, they mostly mean the use of a lot (melodramatic) drama, colorfully exaggerated characters, and a story that grows ever larger and more significant until it is no longer about battles between soldiers but about toppling gods or overcoming concepts like “death” or similar.
Everyone who hoped that this is not the case in Final Fantasy XVI will be disappointed.
Drama is part of it – even in a scope that we sometimes find exaggerated in the West.
FFXVI is fundamentally a “medieval fantasy world” with plenty of magic. It forgoes high technological advancements, wacky guns, flying cars, airships, or combat mechs. The basic setting of the world is almost simple and down-to-earth.
While the land is covered with ruins that presumably belonged to a previously culturally and technologically advanced people, nothing has survived apart from the foundations.
Final Fantasy XVI avoids “tech gimmicks.” It is a world of swords and carts, simple stone or wooden houses, and chocobos as pack animals to transport heavy loads.
However, as a Western fan, you might still find it hard to roll your eyes at some things. Because of course, the dragon Bahamut not only has “Flare” and “Mega-Flare” as attacks but also “Giga-Flare” and “Zeta-Flare.” You quickly find yourself taken back to your childhood when you concocted fantasy weapons to claim the last candy bar using “superduperultraviolent flare.”
Famous series classics like Odin and his six-legged horse are, of course, included as well.
However, and I want to make this clear, FFXVI avoids something that many previous installments have done. This is a mild spoiler that you will surely forgive me: FFXVI does not suddenly pull a new threat from its sleeve at the end, which had been holding all the threads the whole time.
I am mainly thinking of titles like “Final Fantasy IX” where after battling the seemingly last boss Kuja, you suddenly had to fight against “Necron,” aka “The Eternal Darkness,” which you had never heard of before, but which was just conjured into existence with a snap of the fingers.
Final Fantasy XVI builds up its opponents and takes its time doing so. After a good half of the game, you will have a pretty solid idea of what or who the threat is that needs to be dealt with – even if the secrets are revealed gradually.
Everything that is bad
Now let’s move on to the negative things. Because there are, unfortunately, plenty.
Side missions – from grand to terrible
The game has an extensive range of side quests and most of them are really good. Even if they are not challenging gameplay-wise, they are always full of story, exciting backstories, or at least offer a nice reward. Often it is told how places develop after the major events that are not so important for Clive. Side characters gain more depth, and sometimes even new features (like chocobo riding or a larger potion inventory) are unlocked.
However, this does not apply to the first roughly 10 side missions in the game. Not only are they undemanding, but they are a sheer insult to the rest of the game. Sometimes they are not just mindless “fetch quests,” but the presentation also lags behind everything before and after.
My worst example: In one of the first side missions, you are supposed to look for wooden beams that someone evidently did not deliver in time. We set out to search and find the wood not twenty meters away. Clive “grabs” the wood with his left hand and then brings his hand to his pocket as if he were casually carrying 200 kg wooden beams in his pants. The same utterly inappropriate animation can be seen when we deliver the wood.
I want to emphasize here that these first side missions are not representative of what comes later in the game. Later missions are exciting, sometimes dramatic, sometimes romantic, and always rewarding.
But the first 10 side quests are an annoyance that should never have made it into the release version.
Side quests often tell how the stories continue after Clive leaves a place.
Crafting – nothing half-hearted or whole
The crafting in FFXVI does its job, and only just. After each major mission, we return to the blacksmith and have a new sword made, which usually has 5 or 10 more attack power. Almost every time, there is also a new belt that provides a bit more defense and a touch more health points.
That’s basically it. Crafting improves Clive, and the necessary resources are thrown at you in battles or side quests, but apart from a somewhat cool side quest line involving the blacksmith, crafting isn’t worth mentioning.
RPG elements like further attributes or special effects are missing. It feels a bit like the developers themselves did not know where they wanted to go with this feature. Because as it is, the equipment could simply have been distributed as drops from bosses.
The limits of the PS5 are being reached
Another rumor that can commonly be heard is that Final Fantasy drives the PlayStation 5 to overheat. At least, I cannot confirm that, even though I played the game in “beautiful” settings for 12 hours or more straight. I never had a console failure.
What is true, however, is that the PS5 is pushed to its limits and the framerate occasionally drops. Not only does it drop below the 60-fps threshold, but in the worst cases even falls below 30 fps.
In battles and most areas of the game, this was not bothersome. However, this could also be the reason why the developers decided to slow down time a bit during the huge Eikon battles when hits are made so that the framerate drop isn’t so noticeable amid all the particle effects.
That the PS5 cannot always perform as the developers imagined is also shown elsewhere. For instance, reflections on water only show objects that are visible in the frame. To illustrate:
If we look at a water surface behind which a wall with towers rises, we see the reflection of the towers and walls in the water. If we lower the camera a bit so that the wall is “cut off” and no longer fully visible on the screen, then the reflection on the water also disappears – even though the towers shouldn’t just have “vanished”.
Lack of diversity
For many, this is certainly a minor point, but it stood out negatively to me. Although FF16 has a huge portfolio of characters, the diversity is comparatively low. It is somewhat striking that all important characters have a rather Caucasian-European look.
This wouldn’t be a problem in itself if you didn’t see NPCs – for instance, in desert regions – indicating that there are also quite dark-skinned characters. It becomes “difficult” especially when you learn that one of the Dominants actually comes from precisely that desert tribe with darker skin – yet he appears as the only one rather light-skinned.
The most important characters of the game lack some diversity.
Moreover, female roles, in general, fare poorly. While I absolutely love Jill and find her particularly strong, that’s as far as it goes. This is partly because the other female (main) characters conform to the most extreme clichés we know from fantasy settings:
There is the hot femme fatale who jumps into bed with every king and strong man to manipulate the fate of the world through seduction.
On the other hand, there is the cool ruler who wants to achieve her goals through intrigue, lies, and assassination attempts.
The only truly assertive woman in a city is, of course, the brothel owner who “knows how the Chocobo runs.”
We have seen all this too often to not find it trite.
Fairness be said that this lack of diversity is only noticed when you really take a moment to stop and think about it. During gameplay, you are consistently well entertained and invested – even if some characters align too strongly with archetypal clichés.
You can read another opinion on Final Fantasy from our author Marie Friske:
Conclusion: A Final Fantasy with weaknesses that disappear behind the strengths
Now let’s get to the final point. Is it worth buying Final Fantasy XVI? Can a game with so many weaknesses really be good? Did the developers do enough right to make the game likable?
The answer to this is a clear “yes” three times. All my criticisms, all the little flaws I noticed, weigh little. They prevent Final Fantasy XVI from being labeled as a “perfect” game. But at the same time, all those negative aspects are so minor, so insignificant when considering the overall work.
Mysterious beings must not be missing, of course.
Final Fantasy XVI is a spectacular fantasy epic with hard-hitting, adult themes, lovingly crafted, and mostly multifaceted characters. In my 70 hours of gameplay, I never wanted to stop. I always wanted to know how the story continues. I was always looking for the next battle because the combat system is addictive. If I had bought a PS5 just for Final Fantasy XVI, I wouldn’t have regretted it.
I am not entirely neutral here. I can’t be because I have just experienced a fantastic game. A game where I repeatedly had tears of joy in my eyes because I was glad to have been able to experience it.
Perhaps Final Fantasy 16 is not “your Final Fantasy”. Perhaps Final Fantasy 16 is “far from what makes a Final Fantasy a Final Fantasy”. Perhaps Final Fantasy 16 does not reach “all the fans who made the franchise great”.
But Final Fantasy 16 is the best Final Fantasy in over 20 years.
