About three months ago, the people behind Dragon Ball not only announced the continuation of the Dragon Ball Super anime but also a remake. This marks the fourth version that fans can see from the beginning of the anime. One of the creators now explains in detail what has changed.
What will change with the remake? So far, it was only known that the anime would receive an extended version titled Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, which retells the story from the very beginning of DB Super. There are expected to be improved visual expressions in every scene and a more immersive and detailed reproduction of the original work.
During the livestream for Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour 2026, which took place on April 19, 2026, Executive Producer Akio Iyoku revealed why the remake is necessary. He names the reasons for what will change with the new edition:
- The beginning of Dragon Ball Super is set ten years in the past. Since then, visual expressions have continually evolved, and integrating these innovations has been an important factor.
- They want to stay closer to the original, meaning the manga by Akira Toriyama.
- There will be new scenes, and the old ones will also be re-rendered, meaning rendered from scratch.
- The art style is said to have been improved.
- The story is set to be completely reconstructed.
You can watch a first trailer for it here:
As an example of the changes, the producer mentions the presence of Beerus. Since he is the God of Destruction, his strength and presence are to be emphasized even more with modern visual techniques.
Unfortunately, Akiyō Iyoku does not elaborate further on what is meant by the reconstructed story. It could mean that the narrative pace improves, even if there are no drastic changes to the main plot.
The Fourth Remake of the Same Story
Who is it worth it for? The remake is really only suitable for hardcore fans or for people who have not seen any version of Dragon Ball Super yet. Because there have been three ways to experience Dragon Ball Super so far.
On one hand, there is the original manga by Akira Toriyama, on the other hand, there is the movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods
related to the anime, and then there is the anime itself. The remake is now the fourth version of the same story.
If you happen to be one of those hardcore fans, you have probably already heard of the one episode of Dragon Ball that was aired only once. It was only shown in Japan: One episode of Dragon Ball is so rare that it was aired only once, and only in Japan
