Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir, is actually pretty selective about who can wield it. A nasty Marvel villain demonstrated a loophole that shows you don’t necessarily have to be worthy to use the hammer.
Not everyone can use Thor’s hammer. To lift Mjölnir at all, one must be worthy. What exactly that means is quite vague. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was shown that Captain America was able to wield the hammer.
But there’s another way. This is shown by a villain who simply bypasses the known rules of Mjölnir and then beats Thor with his own weapon.
Without gravity, there are also restrictions
What was the trick? In the comic Hulk No. 5 from 2008, the Red Hulk (Thaddeus Ross) confronts the Avenger Thor after battling the well-known green Hulk. The two exchange fierce attacks against each other. But the Red Hulk is significantly smarter than his green counterpart.
He jumps into the air with the hammer in hand and explains to the shocked Thor that he can take the hammer as long as Thor holds Mjölnir. In the depths of space, the Red Hulk then explains another loophole: Without existing gravity, the Red Hulk can rip the hammer from Thor and really deal some damage.
After the great humiliation, the Red Hulk delivers the injured Thor to the moon, causing the hammer to sink into the ground – now that there is gravity again. With his great strength, the Red Hulk jumps back to Earth.
The Red Hulk is much smarter than the regular Hulk, at least in their forms. Behind him is Thaddeus Ross, one of Hulk’s greatest enemies, who is a high-ranking general in the U.S. Army. He was seen as the Red Hulk in the latest Captain America film.
What does it even mean to be worthy? Mjölnir was forged by the dwarves of Nidavellir at the request of Odin, the godfather – long before humans existed on Earth. Odin then imbued the hammer with a spell so that no one could simply wield the powerful weapon. One must be worthy.
What exactly that means is unclear. Thor is perhaps the most well-known user of the hammer. Besides him, from the 4th Thor film, there’s also Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman. In Avengers: Endgame, Captain America also demonstrated how well he could handle Mjölnir.
