Rod Fergusson, the head of the Diablo franchise at Blizzard, explained in an interview what his vision for Diablo 4 is. Apparently, he wants to take the best features from all the predecessors to create the ultimate new Diablo.
Who is Rod Fergusson?
- Rod Fergusson has been the head of Diablo at Blizzard since 2020. Fergusson is known as the “Closer,” someone who finishes games.
- He previously worked on games like Gears of War, Unreal Tournament 3, and Shadow Complex.
- Fergusson also spent a considerable amount of time at Epic Games and said that if he had stayed there, he would have shut down Fortnite.
What does Rod Fergusson say about Diablo 4? In an interview with IGN, Rod Fergusson and Game Director Joe Shely talked about what makes Diablo 4 (via YouTube) special. It included discussion about the franchise’s history.
One sentence, however, brings especially great joy:
I often think about how to elegantly describe what Diablo 4 actually is. Because the team pays such respect to the franchise’s past, while also bringing new innovations, I think [of Diablo 4] as an equation. For me, it’s the dark tone of Diablo 1, the progression of Diablo 2, and the combat system of Diablo 3 combined with the new innovations of Diablo 4 like open world and much more gameplay options.
Although this information is not really new and Fergusson spoke about how dark Diablo 4 is really supposed to be before, many fans are excited by this statement.

“I’m glad they emphasize that so often”
This is how the fans react: On reddit, the community discusses the brief interview. It is said there that Fergusson’s statement is bold. One remains “interested but skeptical.” This passage about the mix of different Diablo games is often referenced.
Even though the information is not really new, the fans are not bothered by it. User Llilyth even sees something good in it:
I’m glad to see how often the developers shout from the proverbial rooftops that they know how much the audience wants the feeling of Diablo 1 and 2 back in the world, and that they understand that the combat system of Diablo 3 was its saving grace.
They put a LOT of effort into communicating with the community through videos like this, dev blogs, quarterly updates, the closed beta […] and more to spread information because Blizzard has some burdens it needs to shed.
The comment receives a lot of support from the community, and many agree that Fergusson’s idea for Diablo 4 would be the best variant of the game. Some who are already allowed to play the closed beta of Diablo 4 even claim that the combat system is even better, even though they shouldn’t actually talk about it.
Gameplay from the Beta of Diablo 4 keeps leaking, but usually disappears quickly. In the official gameplay, you can see how 3 of the 5 classes of Diablo 4 play:
Diablo 4 is still a major hope for many fans, who are not quite sure how much they should look forward to it.
Blizzard has recently faced major difficulties with its reputation due to scandals and negative headlines regarding Diablo Immortal and Overwatch 2. The father of Diablo also says he would have done some things differently:
