When it comes to the currently best MMOs and MMORPGs, the same games have been appearing on the lists year after year for what feels like an eternity. Of course, Final Fantasy XIV, WoW, Guild Wars 2, Elder Scrolls Online, and others are still a lot of fun today. However, there is also a lack of fresh competition that is large and ambitious enough to really shake up the genre again.
We could certainly all use a new online role-playing game that captivates us for weeks or even months. Whether Aion 2 can be that game will be revealed sometime in September. Until then, I have a few smaller recommendations for all MMO fans that usually fly under the radar but can definitely captivate in their niche for a small price.

What makes the game special? The MMO Lite from Shiro Games has a colorful graphics style, action-packed battles, and world-building that feels like a mix of Valheim, Guild Wars 2, and Wildstar. A significant focus is on exploring the game world (for example, with a glider), which benefits tremendously from the high visibility of the game as well as the treasures or activities hidden everywhere.
When you stand on a hill and look down at a vast plain, you will most likely see various other players who are also exploring that region. However, due to the many relatively small layers into which the server is divided, it never feels “massively”; you will never encounter a truly large number of players. Raids and important social features like guilds or an auction house are (still) not available.
