What makes the game special? Project Gorgon is an indie MMORPG and aims to bring you back to the times of EverQuest and Asheron’s Call. There are no predefined classes. You decide which skills to learn, combine, and master. The combat system relies on classic tab-targeting.
There is a significant focus on exploring and understanding the world and its rules. If you catch fire from an enemy’s fire spell, you can jump into a river to extinguish the flames. You can even leave your footprint in the world: for example, write a letter or a book to establish yourself as a poet or author.
Even during the Early Access phase, Project Gorgon was somewhat of a critic’s darling, maintaining a strong 86 percent positive reviews for a long time. After the official release in January 2026, it seemed that the final version would also resonate well with the players. Due to the surge of players, there were even temporary server issues.
However, in the past months, the reviews have noticeably turned more negative – they are at 67 percent over the last 30 days. This has caused the overall rating to drop from 86 percent positive to 82 percent.
One reason for this may be the community’s anger over a member of the Project Gorgon team who allegedly abused their power and issued unjustified bans. Although this employee has been reassigned due to the criticism, this beef has left its mark.
If you still want to take a look, you can do so for free via the demo on Steam. Despite the declining average rating, Project: Gorgon remains one of the highest-rated online role-playing games on Steam.
