Valheim is finally finished and brings new challenges with version 1.0. MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus has already tested them but has to admit: Without cheating, he would have never done it.
It took over 5 years, during which I long waited for the release. I spent over 120 hours in Early Access, and now, September 9th 2026, Valheim is finally completed. I could already play in advance and was completely fascinated by the new content.
What has always made Valheim special to me, besides the Viking setting of course, is the boss system: Instead of simply planting a tough opponent somewhere in a dungeon, each biome is its own chapter of a long journey.
From start to end, I collect everything there is to gather in a biome and prepare for the epic boss fight, which then rewards me with the item I can use to continue in the next biome – over and over again.
Now I have seen the last boss and … really don’t know how anyone is supposed to beat him without cheating, let alone solo. Dear devs: WHO CAME UP WITH THIS?!
Note: Even if I try to remain as spoiler-free as possible, I can’t completely avoid talking about the new endgame of Valheim. So consider this a mild spoiler warning.
I’m sure: Even Thor himself couldn’t master the boss fight without a black eye
The final boss in the new biome, the Deep North, is

Kall Fimbulbringer. For those who don’t know the name: The Fimbulwinter is basically the beginning of Armageddon in Norse mythology. Three years of icy winter, without summer. Crops wither, people starve, wolves roam the land. What follows is the World Fire, the flood of the Midgard serpent, and finally the total darkness when the wolf Skoll swallows the sun – then Ragnarök begins, the end of the world, or the end of the gods at least.

If you are used to the bosses so far, this one is another level of difficulty. The fight is devided in three phases:
- first, it’s just the boss himself against you
- then he freezes for a moment, and you have to defeat all the bosses in the game again in his arena
- only then will the final boss be attackable again, and phase 3 starts
As if the phases weren’t exhausting enough, the boss hits so hard that the ground (and the screen) is literally shaking. He slammed me into the wall so cruelly that I could see nothing but part of his model. Moving or hitting was almost impossible, even in God mode granted by admin command.
Valheim is tough, even the trees are deadly enemies, but I absolutely did not expect such a boss fight. Anyone wanting to beat him without cheats should prepare for many attempts with probably a rather flat learning curve. My tips:
- Build a portal as close to the boss portal as possible, so the journey isn’t too far.
- Get teammates and have one person “tank”, that is, attract the attention so that everyone else can at least learn the attack patterns.

Reaching the boss alone already requires a world trip – or several, to be precise
Just getting to the final boss is already an odyssey. Iron Gate has introduced a whole series of new enemies within the Deep North that are almost all necessary to even enter the boss arena. Once again, consider this a small spoiler warning, but think of it as a rough walkthrough in case you’re stuck. Still, I’ll hide all of this in the spoiler:
This is how you get to the final boss in Valheim 1.0
- To be able to fight the boss at all, you need to find the Aesir portal, which works through stone tablets as usual.
- The portal only opens when you place three units of Evil Blood in the offering bowl in front of the portal. Valheim itself doesn’t tell you which item goes into the bowl.
- You get Evil Blood by repelling Jotun invasions and destroying the Black Ice in their hearts. Invasions can appear all over the world, but normally not near your buildings.
- To start an invasion, you first need to destroy black blood in a Mörkhalla, one of the two new dungeons in the High North.
- The Mörkhalla is locked, and you first need a Decorated Key, the mold of which you find in the second new dungeon, the Twisted Tunnels.
Just to get to the final boss, I estimate that about 10-15 hours of pure grind and travel time will be necessary – more if you play alone and have to explore the entire world by yourself.
A rewarding end that is worth the effort
All of this may sound intimidating now, but in the end, it is exactly the worthy ending that Valheim deserves. After so many years, updates, and such an epic story, which is even more impressively told in version 1.0, the boss fight followed by a cinematic feels like the end of a really good book.
I’d even wish more games would do it this way … even if I might not need such a tough boss fight each time. Maybe I’m just out of practice, and the people who have sunk a few thousand hours into Valheim just one-shot the final boss. Maybe I just missed the Köttbullar as the best buff food and no, you don’t pronounce it like you think.
Either way, the Valheim update for the release completely surprised me. I didn’t expect the developers to put so much heart into a game that many already considered finished. More games and devs like this would be a true blessing.
Do you already have a plan on how you will approach Valheim 1.0? Do you play alone or with friends? Are you ready to suffer for the end of the game … or are you making it easy with cheats? Leave a comment!
Although Valheim has been playable since 2021, it will probably still be one of my highlights in 2026, precisely because the 1.0 release does so much right – similar to Enshrouded. Fans of the genre can really look forward to a richly set table this year: 2026 is the best survival year in a long time, and 3 new hits are already confirmed
