Swords are quite important in the world of Game of Thrones. We take a look at 10 particularly legendary weapons that have more lore than some characters.
What is Valyrian steel? In Westeros, swords are often more than just simple weapons. They symbolize power, status, and the legacy of one’s house. This is especially true for the extremely rare and valuable swords made of Valyrian steel. Allegedly, dragonfire and ancient magic were once used to create this extraordinary material. How exactly – that is a long-lost secret.
Swords made of Valyrian steel are exceptionally light, sharp, and nearly indestructible. They can effortlessly penetrate armor and can also put an end to one of the most dangerous creatures in Westeros: the White Walkers.
According to books, there are about 200 weapons made of Valyrian steel in Westeros. Most of them are swords, but there are also daggers and axes.
What was the ranking based on? We look at swords that were particularly important in Westeros, accomplished great deeds, or simply have many legends surrounding them. They all have one thing in common: they can face the White Walkers. Most of these swords are made of Valyrian steel – although there are exceptions.
Bonus: Dawnbringer
- Holder: Tommen II. Lannister
Dawnbringer is a somewhat special case. The sword itself hasn’t experienced much. However, the story around it is still relevant. Therefore, it gets a special place here.
About a hundred years before the fall of Valyria, the Lannisters are said to have acquired a sword made of Valyrian steel. In true house fashion, they supposedly paid an incredibly high sum for it. However, the joy over the new treasure did not last long. Less than a hundred years later, Dawnbringer was lost when the then-king Tommen II set out on an expedition to the ruins of Valyria with the sword and never returned.
Since then, the Lannisters have desperately tried to obtain a replacement. In the books, Tywin, for example, wanted to buy swords from smaller and poorer houses. However, he was turned down each time. Tywin’s younger brother Gerion even attempted to retrieve the sword by himself and disappeared without a trace.
Only after the execution of Ned Stark did the Lannisters finally obtain the Valyrian steel they coveted so much.
