Blackfyre is perhaps the most politically significant sword in history. It was the blade of Aegon the Conqueror himself. For generations, it was tradition that the reigning Targaryen king bore this sword. It became a symbol of the legitimacy of the throne. Therefore, it also plays a significant role in House of the Dragon. There, Aegon II received the sword after he was crowned king. This was another blow to Rhaenyra, who would have rightfully held the sword as her father’s heir.
Later, the significance of Blackfyre led to a huge catastrophe. When King Aegon IV did not gift the sword to his rightful heir but to his bastard son Daemon Blackfyre, a civil war broke out. Daemon founded House Blackfyre and claimed the throne for himself. This event later became known as the Blackfyre Rebellion and nearly led to the downfall of the Targaryens.
Since the end of this rebellion, the sword has been lost. But its name and history are still legendary.
