Longclaw is the ancestral sword of House Mormont and has been in the family for over 500 years. It is a so-called bastard sword – long enough to be wielded with two hands, but also light enough for one hand. This designation became even more fitting when the bastard Jon Snow became the famous wielder of the sword.
As Jorah Mormont fell from grace and fled into exile, the sword initially remained with Jeor Mormont, the commander of the Night’s Watch. After Jon saved his commander from a wight, he gifted the sword to him. The original pommel, depicting a bear, was replaced with a white direwolf’s head – fitting for Jon’s direwolf Ghost.
Longclaw was the first weapon to show us in the series what Valyrian steel can really do. In the Battle of Hardhome, Jon killed a White Walker, which shattered to ice dust upon contact with the blade.
