Rank 7: Ice
- Holder: Eddard “Ned” Stark
Ice is perhaps one of the most well-known swords in the series. The massive two-handed sword of House Stark has been in the family’s possession for over 400 years. It represents the strength, honor, and wildness of the North. Due to its size, it has rarely been wielded in battle, at least in recent times. Instead, it primarily served as a ceremonial sword for executions. The Starks carry out these according to the principle “The man who speaks the judgment should also swing the sword.”
However, Ice’s tale ends with tragic irony. Joffrey not only had Ned Stark executed with his own family sword. He didn’t even wield the blade himself but had an executioner do the dirty work. This stands in stark contrast to the justice and honor of the Starks, which he cruelly humiliated with this act.
Subsequently, Ice was melted down and reforged into the two Lannister swords Oathkeeper and Widow’s Wail. A fitting symbol for the downfall of the Starks and the rise of the Lannisters.
