Heartbane is the Valyrian sword of House Tarly and has been in the family’s possession for over 500 years. During the reign of King Aenys I Targaryen, long before the events of Game of Thrones, Sam Tarly wielded the sword in battle against the so-called Vulture King. He rebelled against the rule of the new Targaryen kings from Dorne. When Sam Tarly was done with the rebels, his sword Heartbane was said to be covered in blood from tip to hilt.
However, we know a different Sam from the series, namely Samwell Tarly from the Night’s Watch. When his father Randyll learns that Sam is in a relationship with a wildling woman, a quarrel ensues. Randyll assures him that the valuable family heirloom Heartbane will never come into the possession of such a traitor. But he did not count on Sam. Sam steals the Valyrian sword and flees.
Later, Sam hands the sword over to Jorah Mormont. He promises to wield the blade in honor of his father Jeor Mormont, who, as Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, was also a father figure to Sam. In the Battle of Winterfell, Jorah slays many undead with Heartbane until he is ultimately overwhelmed.
