The planned changes to the Mythics in Season 14 of Diablo 4 were simply too arbitrary for the community. After criticism, Blizzard is making adjustments even before the launch.
What changes to Mythics were criticized? Generally speaking, “Mythic” is no longer its own rarity tier in Season 14 but rather a modifiable item quality. Any Unique can become mythic using fragments of madness in the Horadrim Cube.
Apart from that, Mythics and also “legendary mythic items” – essentially those that you already know as classic drops – should only have a single fixed affix.
Even beforehand on Reddit, there was significant pushback, which was later confirmed on the PTR:
- When converting Uniques into a Mythic in the Horadrim Cube, players received a random mythic item of the same category. This meant, in concrete terms: Boots could become a chest armor through the upgrade. This led to completely arbitrary and unpredictable results.
- Through enchanting, transfiguration, and hardening, affixes were not upgraded to the maximum level. This didn’t align with how Mythics were supposed to function.
- That guaranteed affixes from Uniques, crafted Mythics, and legendary Mythics were reduced to one should give players more freedom, but according to feedback, it diluted the identity of the items.
Mythics should retain their identity while still offering flexibility
This is what Blizzard changes about crafting Mythics in Season 14: After player feedback from those who tested the changes on the PTR, Blizzard is again adjusting the Uniques and Mythics. You can craft Mythics starting from level 70 – or more precisely, as soon as you see the recipe “Upgrade to Mythic” in the Horadrim Cube.
If you upgrade a Unique in the cube, you will always receive a Mythic for the same equipment slot. So if you upgrade boots, you will also get a random pair of mythical, unique boots. One-handed weapons, off-hand weapons, and shields count for the same slot. If you upgrade a unique one-handed weapon, the result could also be a mythical shield or focus.
With the Occultist, you can also reroll the affixes of unique, mythic-unique, and legendary-unique items. In addition, affixes from enchanting, transfiguration, and hardening now always roll with the maximum value.

This is what changes with “old” Mythics: Many legendary Mythics like the Ring of the Starless Sky or the Harlequin’s Crown are a “must-have” for many endgame builds. To give players more freedom and build variations, Blizzard reduced the fixed affixes to one.
After the criticism, the developers have stepped back a bit here, increasing the number of fixed affixes on Uniques and Mythics to two. This is supposed to offer a balance between the uniqueness of the items and new options for diverse builds.
You can find the exact changes to all items and further patch notes at news.blizzard.com. Here are a few examples of adjustments to popular legendary Mythics:
- Harlequin’s Crown
- Guaranteed Affix 1: Primary Core Attribute
- Guaranteed Affix 2: Maximum Life
- Andariel’s Visage
- Guaranteed Affix 1: Primary Core Attribute
- Guaranteed Affix 2: Poison Resistance
- Ring of the Starless Sky
- Guaranteed Affix 1: Primary Core Attribute
- Guaranteed Affix 2: Attack Speed
- Veil of the False Death

- Tyrael’s Might

Of the Mythics that you receive as regular drops, you may still equip as many as your item slots allow. However, you can only wear one Mythic at a time that you have crafted yourself.
With Season 14, Blizzard is not only revising the Mythics but also adjusting the war plans and the cap for Oboluses. All changes, new content, and information about the start of the new season can be found in our overview: Diablo 4 Season 14: Start, Release Date, and PTR
