During the ONL of gamescom 2026, “Warlock,” the new action RPG from Wizards of the Coast set in the universe of Dungeons & Dragons, provided a first glimpse into the gameplay. MeinMMO editor Caro loves to play this class in D&D and is glad that the potential of warlocks is being recognized … even if her own isn’t as strong.
What does the gameplay in Warlock look like? Unlike what one is used to from Dungeons & Dragons and its spinoffs like Baldur’s Gate 3, Warlock focuses on action-packed, faster gameplay, not turn-based combat. This was also shown during the Opening Night Live of this year’s gamescom.
You can see how Kaatri, the protagonist and titular warlock from Warlock, arrives at a village, where she immediately receives looks at how magic can be useful outside of combat, but also how she defends herself against opponents with spells and a sword.
The duality of the warlock, which makes her so popular among fans of the class – as well as myself, becomes very clear in these 8 minutes. Being able to assert oneself with magic, weapons, and both in tandem, and seeing it in the form of action gameplay, will surely exhilarate every warlock player. Especially since it appears that one doesn’t even have to worry about burning spell slots, as these function more like a cooldown. This makes the warlock even more powerful.
After the ONL appearance, it’s clear to me: You’ve made me, as a warlock ultra, more than just curious. Although it made me realize that I am wasting a lot of potential in tabletop D&D.
Thanks to Kaatri, I realize what a lightweight my warlock is
Seeing how Kaatri behaves in combat, uses magic, and also wields a curse blade, immediately grabbed me as a big fan of this class. It’s incredibly cool to see how cinematically a warlock fights, especially when you can only imagine it in your head during your weekly D&D session.
Through the showcased combat of the gameplay reveal, I not only realized why I chose this class in D&D back then, but unfortunately also that I am not doing justice to my own warlock when I see what Kaatri can do.
My warlock (that is, yes, me) primarily relies on Eldritch Blast in combat and, when the situation allows, on a hearty “Hunger of Hadar.” Somehow I’ve become stuck after all these years because that was all I needed. The gameplay in Warlock made me aware again after a long time of what warlocks can actually deliver. Just the diversity of the spells you can see inspires me to take another look at my spell list in D&D.
Not only the gameplay but also the other aspects of being a warlock are beautifully staged
Besides the gameplay, I was especially captivated by the first 72 seconds of the preview. Just seeing Tasha, a true celebrity in Dungeons & Dragons, made me squeal. The subsequent interaction between her and Kaatri, between patron and warlock, perfectly captures the vibe that a role-playing enthusiast wishes for.
The class of warlocks is often edgy, that’s no secret, and their players are aware of that. It’s all the nicer that the game not only pays attention to gameplay and combat but also to the story surrounding Kaatri, Tasha’s influence, and this dark heart’s desire that the protagonist harbors. I’m already looking forward to more!
