During the ONL of gamescom 2026, “Warlock,” the new action RPG from Wizards of the Coast in the universe of Dungeons & Dragons, gave a first glimpse into gameplay. MyMMO editor Caro loves to play this class in D&D and is excited that the potential of warlocks is being recognized… even if her own character in tabletop is unfortunately not that strong.
What does the gameplay in Warlock look like? Unlike what one is used to from Dungeons & Dragons and spin-offs like Baldur’s Gate 3, Warlock focuses on action-packed, faster gameplay, not turn-based combat. This was also shown during the Opening Night Live of this year’s gamescom.
One can see how Kaatri, the protagonist and namesake warlock from the game, reaches a village where she immediately receives looks from people, how magic can be useful outside of combat, but also how she defends herself against enemies with spells and sword.
The duality of the Warlock, which makes her so popular with fans of the class – as well as with me, becomes very clear in the 8 minutes. Being able to assert oneself with magic, weapons, and both in tandem and to see it in the form of action gameplay will surely delight every warlock player. Especially since it seems one doesn’t have to worry about burning spellslots, as they function more like a cooldown. This makes the warlock even more powerful.
After the ONL appearance, it became clear to me: As a warlock fan, this has made me more than just curious. Although it made me realize that I am wasting a lot of potential in tabletop D&D.
Thanks to Kaatri, I realize what a noob my warlock is
Seeing how Kaatri behaves in combat, uses magic, and also handles a hexblade directly caught me as a big fan of this class. It is incredibly cool to see how cinematically a warlock can fight, especially since one can otherwise only imagine it in their heads during the weekly D&D session.
Through the shown combat in the gameplay reveal, it became clear to me after a long time not only why I initially chose the class in D&D but also, unfortunately, that I am not doing justice to my own warlock when I see what Kaatri can do.
My warlock (yes, me) mainly relies on Eldritch Blast in combat and, when the situation allows, on a juicy “Hunger of Hadar.” After all these years, I somehow got stuck because it was all I needed. The gameplay in Warlock made me aware again after a long time of what warlocks can actually deliver. Just the diversity of the spells one can see inspires me to take another look at my own spell list in D&D.
Not only the gameplay, but also the other aspects of being a warlock are super well staged
Besides the gameplay, I was especially impressed by the first 72 seconds of the insight. Just seeing Tasha, who is a true celebrity in Dungeons & Dragons, made me squeal. Also, the subsequent interaction between her and Kaatri, between patron and warlock, perfectly captures the vibe that one wishes for as a role-playing enthusiast.
The warlock class is often edgy, that’s no secret and its players are aware of it. All the more wonderful that the game not only pays attention to gameplay and combat, but also to the story surrounding Kaatri, Tasha’s influence, and this supposed dark heart’s desire that the protagonist harbors. I am already looking forward to more!
