MeinMMO editor Jasmin was able to watch a one-hour demo of Final Fantasy VII Revelation at Gamescom 2026. She wanted to take on a challenge that she can now only overcome in the full version.
The focus while playing was on the Highwind, the new airship of Cloud and his crew: a vehicle that we can pilot in the air over the entire world map. So I swung behind the wheel and steered the airship over the ocean, where several continents were bustling.
What’s particularly cool is that players can jump from the airship from anywhere. With a parachute, one can then aim for the point they want to reach from the world map. I tried out numerous landing spots and was always able to find a safe place to land.
With the push of a button, it is even possible to land directly on your Chocobo. What I particularly liked was that you don’t lose any time when you descend from the air to the ground. Once I landed on the back of the Chocobo, I could continue charging ahead and exploring.
In the demo, besides piloting the airship and landing, there was another point I wanted to check out, but I was held back because the content was just too difficult.
Parachute jump into misfortune
Landing anywhere on the entire world map doesn’t quite work. Because above the desert, a large storm has formed, making it impossible for us to land directly in the middle. When I tried to land in the desert area, I was blown off course by the wind and moved to a marginal area in the sand.
The reason is that one of the guardians has settled there, an extremely powerful boss in Final Fantasy VII: Revelation. Guardians are even partially integrated into the main story.
When I landed far from the center of the desert, several tentacles suddenly shot towards me. I had to defeat them in a battle and sacrificed many Phoenix Down items, as the opponent was really tough.
The enemy not only dealt significant damage, but also absorbed many of my hits.
When I finally defeated the tentacles, I already thought that it couldn’t possibly be over yet. Everywhere in the desert, suddenly tentacles appeared at several locations that needed to be defeated in order to ultimately free the great guardian.
On my second attempt, I unfortunately died a miserable death because I had forgotten to heal myself beforehand, and my healing items were also running low.

When I finally had the game-over screen in front of me, an employee from Square Enix tapped me on the shoulder and advised me to let this fight go for this demo, as it was far too difficult and I should rather explore other things.
On the one hand, I agreed with him and wanted to see as much as possible in the demo, which is why I decided to leave the desert and continue in another area.
On the other hand, there was still this pain in me that I had suffered a defeat against a guardian. In the full version, I will ultimately begin my quest for revenge against the tentacle guardian from the desert.
I am glad that Final Fantasy VII Revelation offers such challenges. Then you are willing to spend your time on certain content even after the main story. Besides the Gold Saucer, the casino in the game, I will tackle this guardian, I already know that.
What additional content from Final Fantasy VII Revelation are you most looking forward to? Feel free to write it in the comments.
I am also looking forward to a particular part of the game that revolves around protagonist Cloud and his identity. It has made Naoki Hamaguchi, the game’s director, cry every time he played through it. You can read the story here: Developer plays his own game 40 times, cries at every single run
