Good items in World of Warcraft can be easily crafted through professions. But unfortunately, the professions are quite difficult to understand.
Good equipment in World of Warcraft is available not only from engaging game content like raids or dungeons, but also through crafting. However, the crafting professions have become quite complex with the “new” system. Many players struggle to access it. This is a problem that the game director also acknowledges.
What is the problem? When crafting, it’s easy to lose track. While it used to be sufficient to have one gathering profession and one crafting profession, there is now much more interaction among the individual professions. Not only do you need materials from many other characters, but also secondary ingredients to imbue certain values onto an item, affect its item level, or activate additional effects. Additionally, there are specific values that are only useful for the profession, such as perception or multicraft.
Crafting has become much more complex and extensive than before.
Professions should be easier, even if they are a success
What did Hazzikostas say? During the “Portal Room Q&A”, Ion Hazzikostas, the game director of WoW, also discussed crafting.
He explained that the professions will further evolve over the next expansions and there will be minor adjustments. The goal here is to improve accessibility, at least for some of the professions.
Hazzikostas generally views the revision of professions as quite a success and appreciates that players can specialize and establish what they want to do, such as crafting the best plate chest armor or the best sword. However, there is a bit too much complexity when compared to, for example, an alchemist who simply gathers herbs to make potions for themselves.
Furthermore, it is time to take a closer look at the secondary professions, namely fishing and cooking. The team is already working on plans for The Last Titan.
Archaeology will not have a revival anytime soon. This secondary profession was discontinued due to its rather boring gameplay with the launch of Shadowlands. Hazzikostas also emphasizes here that they would love to bring the profession back, but first need to consider how to create modern, more interesting gameplay.
Cortyn thinks: I still find the “new” crafting system introduced with Dragonflight quite good, but I also understand the criticism. If you take an hour or two to dive into the various professions, everything fits nicely together and is easy to understand. However, if you are more accustomed to the classic system or particularly have professions like herbalism or mining, you can quickly feel overwhelmed by the numerous menus and optional reagents.
A bit of overdue baggage could be removed from the system. While with Midnight they have already reduced the quality levels of materials, there is certainly more that can be done. Entry must be made easier or the tutorials more extensive so that everyone can enjoy crafting again.
