No ruler is as legendary as Aegon the Conqueror. Even the calendar is marked by the point when Aegon’s reign began (A.C. stands for “after Aegon’s Conquest”). For two years, he conquered the Seven Kingdoms with the help of his two sister-wives and three great dragons. Only Dorne resisted his influence.
From the swords of his defeated enemies, Aegon forged the Iron Throne and established the Targaryen rule, which would last over 300 years. He was not only a capable warrior but also a good statesman. He always acted pragmatically, was wise in dealing with defeated foes, and generous to his allies. Thus, he created a stable realm that he skillfully governed until the end of his life.
Unfortunately, his succession did not go as smoothly. The succession disputes after Aegon’s death led to the first major crisis of House Targaryen and destabilized the newly established realm.
