At the launch of Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred, there were virtually no guides and builds available. Players who only play by the book were quite lost – but are now saying that this new experience was really good.
When Lord of Hatred was released on April 28, no expert had a thoroughly tested and finished build ready to provide to the community.
The pre-test, in which we also participated, had a very limited selection of testers, and guides were only allowed to be published some time after the release.
Sites like maxroll and experts like wudijo and Rob had to play and test themselves first to see what worked – especially since Blizzard rebuilt all skill trees in Diablo 4 and the Warlock was fully playable for the first time ever.
Initial players desperately asked for builds or copied what the streamers were playing, but the result was that it was boring. The community advised simply to play and disregard builds. This seems to hit a nerve.
“Playing at release was actually super fun”
After suggestions to “just play” emerged, another thread appeared on Reddit where a user explained:
I was initially disappointed, but not surprised when maxroll and mobalytics had no tier lists or current builds available at release. Normally, I choose a build between B and S tier based on what I want to play, because the most fun part for me is playing and collecting gear, not testing builds […]
But since I had no guides, I decided to try it myself. I now have a small, self-built Holy Lance build that can even survive Torment 5!

Other users agree and say that following builds robbed them of enjoyment. Once you have the optimal build with all aspects, there’s simply nothing left to do. Experimenting makes it fun.
Are you still looking for some support? Here you can find some guides and builds if you prefer not to build yourself:
Aside from the state of the builds and guides, Lord of Hatred launches with strong ratings from the community. It receives praise especially for the story, but the new systems and features are also well-received. Blizzard is already working on criticized points: Annoying feature excludes players from their loot in Diablo 4, Blizzard helps with a hotfix
