In Path of Exile 2, trading items is already in full swing. We explain how the trading system works with 0.4.0 and what you need to keep in mind.
How does trading work in Path of Exile 2? When the Early Access of Path of Exile started, there was – just like in the predecessor – no auction house or anything similar where you could simply offer your items. Instead, you had to go to a special website of the developers (via pathofexile.com), through which most trading took place.
On the website, you can still buy almost any item in the game to upgrade your character, even if you are always dropping the wrong items from the boss. You can also sell these items through the website and earn currencies.
To trade there, you first need a “Path of Exile” account. If you don’t have one yet, create one and link the platform where you bought your game on pathofexile.com. It’s best to set the website to the language you have in the game via the flags at the top right, so you can directly find the items you are looking for.
What is asynchronous trading? The developers significantly expanded trading in Path of Exile 2 with “The Third Edict”.
- There is now a so-called asynchronous trading system that allows you to buy items from players instantly, even when they are offline.
- With the launch of the update, you can convert your premium stash tabs into merchant tabs. When an item is sold through such a merchant tab, the buyer must pay a small gold fee for the trade. The seller does not pay any fee for sold or offered items.
- Additionally, there is now an endgame market browser. You can open this via the menu item “Market Panel” (shortcut: /). Then search for your desired item there. Once you find it, you can click on “Secure Item” to teleport to the owner’s hideout. There you can buy the item in the local shop. The seller does not need to be offline for this. Furthermore, you have access to almost all functions of the previous trading website. More on that below.

How to buy items in Path of Exile 2
On the trade page or in the new endgame market of PoE2, you can directly search for or filter items. These filters allow you to filter by values, types of items, or certain properties. For example, you can display all items that give you bonuses to minions.
Make sure to set the league you are playing in next to the search bar. Otherwise, you will automatically search in the standard league, even if your character is not there.
However, it is also important with the filter that requires levels. The ideal item for your build is of no use to you if you can only equip it after many hours of gameplay because your level is not high enough or your stat values are too low.
Once you have filtered for an item, you will see an overview like this:
When you find an item you want and the price indicated on the right side suits your taste, you need to click the “Whisper Message” / “Direct Whisper” button. This way, you send a direct message to the seller in-game.
If the player is not AFK, they will usually invite you to the party. Accept this invitation and then visit the seller in their hideout by right-clicking on their icon and pressing the respective button.
If neither of you has a hideout yet, you need to agree on a meeting point for trading. Most choose the town of Act 1.
If you are in the same region, you just need to right-click on the player and press the “Trade” button. Place the payment in your field and wait for the item from your counterpart before confirming the trade. Hover your mouse over the item to make sure all values match. When you are ready, confirm the trade.
To buy an item in asynchronous trading, you can teleport directly to the seller’s base with the new teleportation button. There, talk to the selling NPC to receive the item. If the home of your counterpart is full, you cannot enter.
How to sell an item in Path of Exile 2
To sell an item on the marketplace in Path of Exile 2, you first need a premium trading tab. Without it, you can still trade, but your items will not be listed on the official site, significantly reducing the chances of a sale.
Before you begin offering your item, you should set up your trading tab correctly. To do this, open the settings of the stash by right-clicking on the name. Set the tab to “Public” and preferably choose the setting “Individual Price per Item”.
Place the item you want to sell in your premium trading tab and right-click on it. Here you can then specify a negotiable or fixed price. Typically, item prices in Path of Exile 2 are listed in “Exalted Orbs”.
Once you have given a price to an item, it will shortly appear on the public trading website. Be sure to check the chat to see if a potential buyer contacts you.
When a buyer contacts you, invite them to the party and meet in the hideout. If you are in the same region, you just need to right-click on the player and press the “Trade” button. Place the item in your field and wait for payment from your counterpart before confirming the trade. Hover your mouse over the payment for safety to ensure it all matches. When you are ready, confirm the trade.
Caution: Scammers
Is there anything else to keep in mind? In Path of Exile 2, there are many scammers and trading bots trying to get your items. The following points can indicate that your counterpart might want to scam you:
- Your counterpart interrupts the trade
- The item looks different, even though it has the same name (e.g., Silk Robe)
- You are told to trade through a middleman
- A flood of messages reaches you after listing your item
- The item is to be exchanged for another item instead of currency
Make sure to closely examine the items and prices at which you offered your item. If something feels off or if everything is delayed, politely abort the trade.
Furthermore, trading with gold is not possible. This currency is almost exclusively for trading with NPCs and is not intended for item trading via the website. Since the update 0.3, it has also been used for the new asynchronous trade.
When selling, you should definitely first see how much comparable items cost and then offer your items at that price. If you are too cheap, you will quickly notice it through a flood of requests. If no one contacts you for too long, you should offer your item cheaper. Alternatively, you can also offer items slightly more expensive through the asynchronous trade and simply leave them for a few days before changing the price.
Warning: Some scammers intentionally list expensive items too cheaply so that you outbid them and they can get your items at a lower price. Be sure to look at more than just the cheapest item.
Especially if you are having problems with a boss fight and don’t want to grind for hours, an additional item from another player can make a crucial difference. Some players find it problematic that it takes too long for certain things in the game: If a mechanic remains in Path of Exile 2, there is a big problem at release, the community believes
