How did the season start? Return to the Ancients was the best season start for Path of Exile 2 since the game was released on Steam. According to SteamDB, over 420,000 players played the ARPG on Steam simultaneously on Sunday.
This is a lot even for Path of Exile 2, as the new season is so well received that the record on Sunday, just two days after the start, was not reached at the actual start of the season on Friday evening. There is also much praise for the developers and the successful season on Reddit.

Where do the many players come from? The main reason for the high player numbers is probably the free weekend. Path of Exile 2 is currently still in Early Access and is normally playable only for a fee.
Although this restriction will likely be lifted with the full release at the end of the year, so many players probably would not have come together without the free weekend. It will be interesting to see how many players log in on Tuesday evening after the free period.
What do the veterans praise? Although the new season did not bring the desired new melee classes, the veterans have received good substitutes with the two new expansion classes Martial Artist and Spirit Walker.
The two classes seem to be reason enough for the veterans to check the ARPG again and go for a new run. Especially the boss-taming Spirit Walker has impressed many players on Reddit.
What is reason number 3? The third reason is the developers’ focus. Instead of simply building new content on the existing systems, they have used their last season before the major release to tweak the fundamentals.
