Many have wondered why it is not yet a core component of World of Warcraft, but now Blizzard is finally changing that.
With the expansion Midnight, Blizzard aimed to eliminate the need for external interface addons. While this has partially succeeded and addons like WeakAuras no longer exist, there are still many important features that are not easily accessible in World of Warcraft. With Patch 12.1 Curse of Ula’tek, a fundamental function will finally be part of the game: coordinates.
Coordinates are finally part of the core game
What will become useless? Until now, a certain type of addon was basically mandatory for every player. Because if you wanted to explain the way to someone, it was only possible through individual pins on the map or through coordinates. However, you could only see the coordinates of each map in the game if you used one of the various addons (like “MapCoords”) to display the coordinates.
This necessity will soon disappear, as with Patch 12.1 it will be a fixed part of the interface.
Why do you need coordinates? Sooner or later, everyone probably needs coordinates at least once. Whether you have found a special NPC through wowhead or are following a guide to unlock a super rare mount – coordinates make searching easier and allow you to move purposefully and find NPCs or objects in the game. Therefore, this function is about 20 years overdue – but better late than never.
Cortyn says: I still have two addons that are currently active on every character. One is the RP addon to provide me with a character description and read others, and the other is a coordinates addon. Whether I’m looking for a specific rare mob or a hidden item needed for an achievement – without coordinates, I would regularly be in trouble.
Thus, Blizzard is continuing its push to make interface addons unnecessary and offer them as part of the core interface. Although this “fight against addons” is far from won, every function added to the core interface is a small step forward.
