WoW gave me a long-lasting friendship and that only because I wanted linen fabric so badly

WoW Leinenstoff Special

Some events in WoW can have far-reaching, positive consequences. MeinMMO author Paul Kutzner can also report on this during our Grindfest theme week 2026.

When Vanilla-WoW was released in Europe in 2005, it hit my friend circle like a bomb. While many, including myself, were already enthusiastic players of Warcraft 3, World of Warcraft had an unbelievable radiance and attraction on us.

So we set off joyfully on the adventure in Azeroth. Along the way, we made some decisions that, in hindsight, may not have been ideal, but created very nice memories. Like the decision to play a warrior with tailoring.

Looking for items, finding friendship

The first profession: My first character was an undead warrior. Since I suffered from chronic inventory space shortages, I chose tailoring for my first profession. Is that the ideal profession for a warrior? That’s debatable. Did I just find the idea fantastic that I could make bags for myself? Definitely!

So I was then a tailoring warrior who not only made bags for myself but also for friends. I also gave bags to other players I met in the starting areas for a small fee. However, I quickly faced a problem: linen cloth. No linen cloth, no bags.

Since farming linen cloth in Durotar and the surrounding areas was too boring and too time-consuming for me, I needed another idea. So I went to Orgrimmar and tried my luck in the general chat channel: “Looking for someone to pull me through the Ragefire Chasm”.

Linen cloth en masse: To my surprise, someone actually responded to my request. A high-level warrior offered to quickly pull me through the first dungeon of the Horde. Of course, I offered him that we could split the loot so that the run wouldn’t be a complete waste for him. After all, my little warrior was anything but rich, so I couldn’t offer him gold.

But he kindly declined and not only offered that I could keep all the loot, but also that we would run through the dungeon twice. So I quickly emptied my now tailored bags, and we set off.

In no time, we ran through the dungeon, thanks to my companion’s high level. And my little tailor heart was racing: so much linen cloth – and I could keep it all.

More than just a run: After the runs, we added each other as friends. And from that day on, we occasionally wrote to each other to see what the other was up to and how things were going in the game. Eventually, we exchanged our Skype names and started talking while playing.

While each of us primarily had our own goals in the game, which were mainly due to the different levels of our characters, we sometimes chatted for hours on the side. Neither the various activities in the game nor the individual life circumstances, such as the drastically varying ages, were a problem for us. We always had nice and entertaining conversations.

Over time, there were always phases when one of us was not playing. But at some point, we were both back in WoW, and the conversations were a fixed part of our journeys again.

However, at some point, I lost interest in the game for good. While we still wrote to each other occasionally, the contact gradually dwindled and has unfortunately completely broken off nowadays.

Even though we no longer have contact today, I look back fondly on that time, the conversations, and a years-long friendship. It only came about because my little warrior wanted to make bags.

Have you made similar friendships and experiences through WoW? Feel free to share your stories with us in the comments. There are always stories in the community about how WoW creates memories and strong bonds. Some of them are quite heart-wrenching and can make a tear roll down: “Crying over a WoW post at half-past one at night was not on my bingo card today”.
