In MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, friendships and relationships can form, bringing some families closer together. This is shown by the report of a player who remembers his deceased mother in Stormwind.
What does the player report? 159 days, 6 hours, and 24 minutes. With this timestamp, Reddit user cinemapastry shares a screenshot showing his mother’s WoW character looking down on Stormwind. The accompanying text reveals that this is the total playtime of his mom in World of Warcraft.
She brought him to Azeroth when he was 7. At that time, she had only bought a copy of the Blizzard MMORPG because it looked interesting. She wasn’t really a gamer back then. In retrospect, it seems almost crazy to him how much this simple decision shaped her life. cinemapastry elaborates further:
Warcraft was something that has always brought us together. As a child, I fell in love with the story, wandered aimlessly in the Elwynn Forest, and discussed all the various quests we were working on together.
Like most kids, I created a new character from each race, played through the starting areas, left them around level 10, and started over – simply because that first exploration was my favorite part of the game. […]
I can still remember our thoughts about each expansion in great detail – when we played, when we took breaks, and how this game was intertwined with our lives. There are countless memories I could write about here, both in the game itself and outside of it.
cinemapastry explains that his mother struggled with severe health problems throughout her life. WoW was a welcome escape from reality and a great way to spend time with her son.
With a mix of sadness and nostalgia, he returned to WoW after a break following his mom’s death. He describes the return as bittersweet because many memories arise that are strongly linked to his mother. For him, it’s clear: He will always cherish WoW and the bond he had with his mother through the game.
To honor his mom, he dressed her main character, with nearly 160 days of playtime, in a stylish transmog set and brought her to Stormwind. That was one of her favorite places in Azeroth. There she now looks down on the capital of the Alliance until perhaps a new adventure beckons one day.
Here is another heartwarming story from the WoW community:
“What a lovely tribute”
How is the community reacting? Many players can relate to cinemapastry’s report. The over 3,500 thumbs up in just a few hours underline this.
- aryuna__ comments under the post: “Crying over a WoW post at one-thirty at night wasn’t on my bingo card today. Thanks for sharing.”
- Odysseus_XAP79 writes: “What a lovely tribute to your mother! May you always find joy and comfort in your memories of her.”
- ylimenoxid remembers: “Thanks for sharing. I had a similar relationship with my father; he lived mostly separated from me during my childhood because he made some wrong decisions due to mental issues, and there were times when he didn’t talk to anyone, but I could always drop by WoW, and there he would talk to me. Since his death, I haven’t played the game because I’m afraid it would be too hard, but you’ve encouraged me to maybe give it a try, out of nostalgia and to remember the time with him.”
This is just one of many personal stories that beautifully showcase how important shared gaming experiences can be for people. For example, imagine losing a loved one far too early, and many years later, you discover that they have been immortalized by the Blizzard developers in World of Warcraft: “I have been crying for days” – Man finds out years later that a friend who died has been immortalized in WoW
