World bosses in World of Warcraft are getting a big change. They are becoming better – and that in every way possible.
If you don’t have time to raid but want a quick chance at some nice loot in World of Warcraft, just take down a world boss. These bosses are usually extremely easy, take less than five minutes, and require minimal social interaction – aside from a click on the group finder.
However, world bosses also bring a variety of problems. Problems that Blizzard has not managed to resolve in over 20 years. But that is changing in patch 12.1.
What is the problem with world bosses? World bosses have faced several issues in World of Warcraft for years. Specifically, these include:
- Ease: World bosses never feel like real bosses. Their mechanics are too simple, and they can be approached with an unlimited number of players, trivializing the fight.
- Server lag: World bosses in the open world cause massive lags that can often be felt throughout the entire zone. Not only can the frame rate plummet, but there are also often several seconds of delays before an input is recognized.
How does Blizzard plan to fix this? Some see it as a grand solution, while others call it capitulation to the problem. But in the future, you will no longer find world bosses in the open world, but in their lair, a so-called “Lair.” You can think of it as a Depth. There is a gray, swirling portal that you walk through, and without a loading screen, you are brought into a phase with the world boss.
Difficulty levels for world bosses
Another neat feature of the new system is that Blizzard can now treat world bosses like real bosses. At the entrance to the lair, you can select a difficulty. You can simply take the “world” difficulty – then everything is as it used to be, and the boss should go down without any issues. Alternatively, you can choose “normal,” “heroic,” or “mythic.” In plain terms, this means: World bosses will henceforth be a real piece of content that is also interesting for raid groups that might have a few minutes left after the main raid.
Cortyn states: Yes, I know. Some will now say that this somehow no longer makes world bosses world bosses. However, I find the solution appropriate and sensible. World bosses have brought many problems over 20 years of World of Warcraft and have mostly become a brainless zerg where you don’t have to think and couldn’t even if you wanted to, because it just lags and stutters.
The fact that these bosses now sit in their lair or den and you have to enter a Depth solves all problems. Both the lack of difficulty and the server lags are now a thing of the past. At least on paper, this is for me a clear “win” – like so much of the upcoming patch 12.1. Because everything we have seen of it so far sounds really good and sensible, in contrast to some of the unfinished features that previous patches have brought with them.
