Rank 5 – Old School RuneScape
Setting: Fantasy | Developer: Jagex | | Platform: PC, iOS, Android | Release Date: February 22, 2013 | Model: Free2Play | Rating on Steam: 83 % Positive
What kind of game is this? Old School RuneScape is the even older version of RuneScape, which has since been developed quite differently. The game was released in 2013, but based on the version that RuneScape had in 2007.
Meanwhile, the old title has been expanded with new content, though still relying on the same virtues of group play, grind, and a “hack and slash” control system. Every new feature must also receive 75 percent approval from the players before being implemented by the developers.
What content does it offer? Similar to RuneScape, the older version relies on:
- Dungeons
- Farming equipment
- 23 life skills
- Mini-games
- PvP content
What do the Steam reviews say? So far, Old School RuneScape has received 19,927 ratings, with 83 percent being positive. In comparison, the counter was at 88 percent positive in January. Even more than RuneScape, the shitstorm from early 2025 had an impact on user ratings.
However, the developers have recovered. Last month, a strong 86 percent of new reviews were positive (out of 151 new ratings).
How many players does it have on Steam? In the past 30 days, there were an average of about 1,413 players online. The peak during this time was 2,289 simultaneously active players. Most RuneScape players are likely to be playing outside of Steam: 12-year-old MMORPG is currently experiencing such a boom that it is getting 33 new worlds
For whom is the MMORPG worthwhile? If you’re looking for both a visual and gameplay classic Old School MMORPG, this is definitely the right place. Although Old School RuneScape does not look graphically beautiful, it offers a large number of content and has a huge and helpful fanbase. However, you need a monthly subscription to experience all the content fully. By the way: There is a new CEO, and he promises: “Never microtransactions”
