Rank 8 – RuneScape
Setting: Fantasy | Developer: Jagex | | Platform: PC, Mobile | Release Date: January 4, 2001 | Model: Free2Play | Rating on Steam: 82% Positive
What kind of game is this? RuneScape is one of the oldest active MMORPGs, first released in early 2001. You experience many adventures in a fantasy world and uncover ancient legends and tales while gods weave dark plans.
You decide whether to explore deep dungeons, fight monsters, and loot treasures or supply adventurers with weapons as a blacksmith. You can even build your own farm and live there.
RuneScape offers classic MMORPG fare that gives you a journey back to the beginnings of the genre.
What content does it offer? In RuneScape, you can spend your time in various ways:
- You can explore dungeons with other players
- Farming equipment
- Level some of the countless life skills
- Experience PvP
The special thing is that the content has not been adapted to “modern games”. There are no solo contents or an overly expansive story. Instead, exploration and group play play an important role.
What do the Steam reviews say? The MMORPG was released on Steam in October 2020 and has received 26,511 reviews since then. 82 percent of these are positive. Currently, 78 percent of the recent reviews (202) are positive.
How many players does it have on Steam? In the last 30 days, there were an average of 2,593 players online and 4,123 at peak. Since RuneScape has existed for decades outside of Steam, the total player counts will be significantly higher. The all-time high is 12,508 concurrently active players.
For whom is the MMORPG worthwhile? If you’re looking for a classic MMORPG with a lot of content but also a lot of grind, RuneScape is worth checking out. Not for nothing has the game, which has been evolving for nearly 20 years, still succeeded in engaging its fanbase. However, the movement and combat systems are somewhat dated. The graphics are also not outstanding. If you want, you can also play RuneScape on iOS and Android.
