Path of Exile 2 recently released a massive update with many new features, and it has been a great success. Player numbers are reaching an all-time high, and even veterans who were previously skeptical, must now admit: Path of Exile 2 has become really good.
On May 29th, Patch 0.5 was released along with the Return of the Ancients update for Path of Exile 2, the largest expansion for the franchise in many years. The update expands the ARPG with several new contents, including:
- the new league “Runes of Aldur” with new runes and Kalguur skills
- 2 new Ascendant classes, Monk and Spirit Walker
- new bosses, unique items, and waypoints
- various improvements for game quality, such as a built-in build planner
You can find all the content in detail in our overview of Return of the Ancients.
One of the perhaps biggest highlights is the ability to sacrifice your character at level 100 to help the entire community and even score a unique title if you’re quick enough.
Path of Exile 2 has more players than ever on Steam due to the update. Although Return of the Ancients came with a few problems that were later addressed (or temporarily worsened) in hotfixes, for many fans, the game is in a really good state.
“It was obvious that PoE 2 would be good”
On Reddit, a user shares a screenshot of his playtime in Path of Exile 1: over 9,000 hours, according to his own statements, even over 10,000. He writes: although he had “hated” Path of Exile 2 for a long time, he must admit that it is finally good with Patch 0.5.
The community agrees in the over 300 comments almost without contradiction. A user with the fitting name “Grinding_Gear_Slave” writes:
As someone who has been playing PoE 1 since 2013, it was obvious that PoE 2 would be good. If anything, PoE 2 is developing too quickly compared to PoE 1.

Something of this sort was also recent criticism of the game, but with Return of the Ancients, the developers have mainly improved the fundamentals rather than just adding new systems on top – even if there are still issues with maps.
However, the great scope and complexity of Path of Exile 2 is not for every ARPG fan. Especially, Return of the Ancients elicits opposing feelings among players of the competing Diablo 4: The big news from Path of Exile 2 reminds Diablo fans why they prefer to play Blizzard’s ARPG.
