The developers of Path of Exile have released a new teaser trailer that shows what the upcoming season is about. Undead seem to play a significant role.
What does the teaser show? The teaser actually only shows a very short scene where a skeleton is brought to life. But for connoisseurs of Path of Exile, this clearly looks like a new version of the well-known Abyss system.
The resurrection of a skeleton on the seabed by the green energy of the Allflame and the teaser title “They Rise Again” sends clear signals to the fans.

Abyss Returns
What is Abyss? The Abyss mechanic has actually been around since December 2017, so a proud 9 years. Nevertheless, it is very popular due to its simple yet rewarding mechanics.
You encounter a glowing green symbol on the ground. As you approach, a rift forms that winds its way through the level, releasing hordes of monsters from the depths. If you are quick enough and can follow the rift to its end, either a chest or a portal to the depths awaits.
Down in the depths, you can then fight a boss that promises even better loot. Especially the high monster density, the simple mechanics, and the good synergy of the loot with many classes make this endgame module one of the most popular in the game.
What could the return look like? As mentioned, the Abyss mechanic is older and thus has aged. Similar to the Breach module, the developers will likely grant an update that refreshes the beloved game mode.
Here we can once again expect completely new features that did not exist before, while the old charm and the fundamental mechanics will remain unchanged.
How do fans react to the theme of the new season? In the comments under the trailer on YouTube, fans express enthusiasm for the theme of the new season. This is probably also due to the fact that Breach has already shown that updates to old modules are not a bad thing, but can actually improve the modes.
According to initial speculation from fans, one might be able to delve into the depths of the Abyss underwater and possibly find previously unknown things.
