The Steam Summer Sale is currently on and there are many bargains. One that MeinMMO author Cedric Holmeier can highly recommend.
My workday often starts with a glance at SteamDB. The website shows me which games are currently trending and what is gaining a bit of hype. But after the Steam Sale started over the weekend, I discovered one of my absolute favorite games there: Watch Dogs 2.
The hacker open-world game from Ubisoft is experiencing a real second spring. Looking at the player numbers, Watch Dogs 2 has almost broken its all-time peak again.
Admittedly: When the title was released, many played on Ubisoft’s then-launcher Uplay, which is why the release peak is only half the truth. But now being able to buy the title for 3 euros at Steam is an opportunity for me to explain why it is definitely worth it.
Here you can see a trailer for Watch Dogs 2:
Sunny San Francisco
Watch Dogs 2 is primarily a hacker open-world, where we play through a narrative story in the style of GTA in the virtual San Francisco. We play as part of a group that opposes evil and fights for good, mixed with hipster looks, a laptop under the arm, and high-tech gadgets.
What personally keeps drawing me into the game even after almost 10 years is the incredibly pretty world that functions like a large theme park and allows activities everywhere. Whether I’m hacking into security systems, racing against NPCs in car races, or digitally spying on other players in the single-player world, Watch Dogs 2 offers countless possibilities for all kinds of nonsense outside the story.
I personally like it even better than in GTA 5 because I don’t have to find the right FiveM server to have fun here.
I also like to try my favorite game mode: Here I hack other players in their own world, and they have to find me. I cannot kill them, but I can create distractions with all kinds of high-tech gadgets. In the end, it all only lasts a few minutes, but it is always fun to watch a confused player searching.
But the game world itself is wonderful. Sometimes I also just drive through the colorful, lively, and sunny game world, which has also brought the city onto my travel bucket list in real life.
Not GTA Online
The multiplayer of Watch Dogs 2 is very good, but not like GTA Online. Many of the missions, duels, or fun modes are instanced. While it has sometimes been difficult to find players due to low player numbers in the past, the new player peak should not cause you any problems here.
It’s best to have a few friends with whom you can also fool around in the sandbox world. Then some of the online missions are possible with good coordination and are particularly fun.
Nevertheless, Watch Dogs 2 shifts the focus away from violence, gangs, and gang wars toward an underground movement, hacking, and a certain hipster culture. You have to like that and it is simply the style of the game that cannot be ignored – even in multiplayer.
Watch Dogs 2 is generally a bit more demanding when it comes to fun. Although the sandbox offers in my impression still more than the single-player of GTA 5, you still have to put more effort into having fun instead of just stumbling from one thing to another.
For me, Watch Dogs 2 is always worth a visit, and I will certainly welcome the new players with a good hacker attack online. Have you ever tried Watch Dogs 2?
