As part of our FYNG panels at gamescom, we were able to give you an exclusive insight into Guild Wars 3 – even if it was just a small one. However, it already raises enough thoughts.
What did we show you? In our panel about the highlights of gamescom from our editorial teams, MeinMMO editor-in-chief Leya talked about her impressions of the upcoming Guild Wars 3 – at least as much as she was allowed to share.
Since we cannot share more extensively with you until September 3rd, what we already know about the new MMORPG, ArenaNet has given us an exclusive sneak peek to show you in the stream. It was the following artwork:

Leya also went into more detail about the presented piece and showed details that might not be immediately noticeable at first glance. She also pointed out again that the story of GW3 takes place about 1,000 years before the events of GW 1 and focuses on the kingdom of Orr and magic.
Since she knew a bit more than we did at that time and could not discuss it, she asked us in the editorial office what particularly stands out to us in this image, and of course, I didn’t need to be asked twice.
Orr, the Underworld, and the Gods
What could be seen in the image? It is clear that a part of Orr is shown here – after all, GW3 takes place there. Now there are different variants of what could be seen in detail:
- The Asura were expanding the underworld at that time and come from the Maguuma Jungle. So it is possible that they brought something from there, looking at the vines and the glowing Chak-like beings. Their tunnels actually extended from the heart of the jungle in all directions.
- As everything revolves around the old Orr, we also know that the gods will play a significant role. Here it is very likely that a connection to Dhuum, the former god of death, is hinted at. He was imprisoned by Grenth, the god of darkness and ice, in the Hall of Chains, where he serves as a raid boss for players. So this could also be a piece of the underworld. The green glow of the beings supports this and implies a potential connection to the magic of necromancy.
- The place looks generally quite abandoned and uninhabited, so it is likely that it was destroyed for some reason and abandoned by its inhabitants.
Dragons, Maguuma, or a New Race? Definitely Gloomy!
What are your theories? On Reddit and X.com you can share your thoughts about the artwork. Some of you support my theory that this could be a connection to the god of death Dhuum and his fall, which would also fit into the timeline of the story.
Others already suspect early connections to the dragons Zhaitan and Mordremoth, who play a significant role, especially in Guild Wars 2. Some hope for a first hint at the still unannounced fourth playable race, which could possibly be related to the Chak-like beings and Maguuma. Others suspect that this could also hint that “verticality” will play an even larger role in Guild Wars 3 than in its predecessor.
What exactly is shown will be revealed to us on September 3rd, when we can talk more about the presented content. Until then, we have to be patient.
Speaking of Asura – they looked very…different in Guild Wars 2. However, I personally find the new old Asura much more interesting, and they will surely cause me to finally take a closer look at the race that I could never be convinced of in all my years of Guild Wars 2: Guild Wars 3 brings back an ancient, hideous race, but now it’s so cute that I absolutely want to play it
