With the Codex of Creation, the last content update for Guild Wars 2: Visions of Eternity will be released on September 15, 2026. After that, fans of the MMORPG will face a long dry spell.
What is known about the update? The Codex of Creation will be released on September 15, 2026, for Guild Wars 2 and will provide the finale of the current expansion Visions of Eternity. The new story content will lead you to the Leyline Expanse, a fresh explorable region. There, you can expect a new meta-event, among other things.
Additionally, the content update will bring each a fractal, a raid, and a convergence. You can learn the mastery Rift Boost and earn a legendary sword plus an infusion. Last but not least, the developers promise an update of the Wizard’s Vault and a slew of fresh rewards and achievements.
Anyone who owns the current expansion can simply download and play the update starting September 15, 2026.
The Big Update Before the Drought
The Great Shadow of Guild Wars 3: Even though the current expansion has been very well received by many fans with its previous updates and Guild Wars 2 has even managed to break its own player records on Steam at times, the Codex of Creation is set to be the last major content update for the MMORPG, at least for the time being.
The reason: ArenaNet now has to fully concentrate on the development of Guild Wars 3 and does not have the resources to simultaneously provide a new expansion along with updates for the predecessor. After the release of Guild Wars 3, they plan to resume content production again.
Currently, there are indications that Guild Wars 3 is expected to be released by May 2028 at the latest. Even if that is currently the plan, it could still change… MMO developments are complex. However, it is clear that the developers are aiming for a beta in autumn 2027. So fans of Guild Wars 2 should prepare for a long content break.
According to ArenaNet, however, at least some innovations are expected to land on the MMORPG’s servers during this phase. A new area in Orr and an expansion of the Hall of Monuments aim to establish the connection to the third part of the series. Additionally, a fresh WvW map is planned.
