In Star Wars: The Old Republic, many fans are returning, and the MMORPG is experiencing a boom like it hasn’t seen in a long time.
What about the MMORPG? Star Wars: The Old Republic underwent a developer change two years ago. Instead of abandoning the MMORPG, the work on it was handed over to Broadsword Games, who have been developing the MMORPG on behalf of EA.
The MMORPG is currently experiencing a significant player boom, reaching the highest concurrent player count since May 2023, shortly before the takeover by Broadsword (Source: SteamDB). The reasons for this are varied. At the same time, players have recently been concerned about the MMORPG. After the outsourcing to Broadsword, they wondered if the game was still important enough for EA to continue renewing the license.
The license is estimated to expire in 2028, which could mean the end for SW:TOR. However, SW:TOR is currently experiencing a new boom.

A True Comeback
Why are so many players returning? Since the takeover, the new developers have not only added new content but also worked significantly on the technology. There was a transition to 64-bit, which has brought drastic performance improvements. Currently, they are also working on an upgrade to DirectX12, which is aimed at preparing the MMORPG for the future.
Even more importantly, the game graphics, which were described as somewhat outdated at release, have received a major update for the first time thanks to the new developers. Although not all planets have been beautified yet, things are getting better and more modern in SW:TOR.
Part of the answer certainly lies in the technical and graphical improvements that the new developers have brought. At the same time, the new Star Wars film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, likely plays a role.
However, external factors are not the only reason for the new hype surrounding Star Wars: The Old Republic. Just recently, the developers at Broadsword Games released the final chapter of the current story expansion.
What is it about? Unlike many other MMORPGs, SW:TOR places an extremely high value on storytelling. Fully voiced quests, endless stories with companions, side missions, and a very long main story distinguish the MMORPG.
This very story has received the last chapter of the sixth expansion, Legacy of the Sith, and offers players the perfect moment to continue and complete the story with their character.
At the same time, the consistently successful development of SW:TOR by Broadsword shows that the MMORPG has a strong future. Fans also see it that way, as the new trailer for the above-mentioned story expansion has made them excited about the MMORPG again.
